Curriculum Matters

Foundation

Foundation has spent the start of Term 4 learning another skill - swimming!

Nearly everyday over the past 2 weeks, our Foundation students have been walking to Caulfield to learn various swimming strokes and skills as well as having some fun in the water.

Level 1

The Level 1’s have had a busy start to the term with their swimming program at Caufield Grammar. We have been very impressed with the way in which the students have handled the swimming program and the level of independence that they have shown with getting changed.

In Literacy, students have enjoyed reading Tiddalick the Frog as part of our narrative study. They have learnt about greed and sharing in this rich traditional dream-time story.

Level 2

We have had so much fun in Level 2 learning about persuasive writing.

We were all so shocked when we arrived at school to find out that our chairs had gone on strike! Our chairs decided to quit being chairs for the day.

Our task was to write a persuasive letter to get our chairs back! We had to be creative and come up with many convincing arguments. We explored how using persuasive techniques such as emotive language and rhetorical questions really supported our arguments.

We hope the chairs never quit again!

Level 3

Level 3 has had a fantastic beginning to Term 4!

In Maths, we’ve been diving into the concept of symmetry, exploring its fascinating patterns and properties. To make our learning even more exciting, we used digital technology to create symmetrical artwork. It was a fun and creative way to apply what we’ve been learning in class.

Our digital designs were then transformed into physical pieces of art, showcasing the students' creativity and their understanding of symmetry.

Level 4

Term 4 has started off with a bang! Students have had a huge focus on their multiplication skills solving a Monster Mystery.

Students have also been improving their skills around Narrative writing and have shown some amazing creativity.

Inquiry is a busy topic this term with a focus on Indigenous Culture and traditions. Students are super excited about going to camp in week 4! Where students will have the opportunity to participate in a range of activities such as the Giant Swing, Flying Fox, Canoeing and they even get to see our amazing Penguins at night! Phillip Island here we come!

Level 5

Level 5 Students Dive into Science with Slime!

Last week, Level 5 students explored the fascinating world of matter by making slime.

Our hands-on activity reinforced understanding of the states of matter and chemical reactions. Students experimented with different ratios of glue, bicarb soda, food colouring and contact solution to create their own ooey, gooey and stretchy concoctions.

They observed the slime's transformation from a liquid to a solid-like substance, concluding that Elmer glue makes the best slime.

Level 6

This term the in reading students of level six have been learning about children's picture story authors.

In the first week of term the students learnt all about Mem Fox and her book possum magic. The students are also learning about all the interesting facts about the author's life like Mem Fox and how she was raised in Zimbabwe and write a little biography about that author, Mem Fox is the author of the book we love called ‘Possum Magic.’

In the second week the level six students learnt all about Julia Donaldson.

Julia Donaldson is a english author who wrote the famous book we all know known as the ‘The Gruffalo’ over 13.5m copies have been sold.

Cartoon Characters

At the end of Term 3, the Year 6’s were learning about character strengths and we got a 100 question test to figure out our character strengths and some strengths we could improve on. Then we were assigned to make a cartoon character for another classmate that had similar characteristics as that person. In 2 of 3 of the classes we knew who we had and who had us, in the other class it was anonymous, (a little like Kris Kringle).

Over 2 weeks we had to draw and colour our character and then choose 4 words that we thought described their personality well. It was a high standard but we all held it up with fantastic pictures all around. To finish the picture off we wrote a letter to that person and glued it on the back. The letter explained why we chose that character and how they showed those qualities.
