French

Bonjour Moriac Families!!

It has been a lovely term 2 so far, the students have been working hard and producing some really amazing work.

In prep, we have begun making statements about our likes and dislikes. Students have learnt how to say 'I like' (J'aime) and 'I don't like' (je n'aime pas). They have written sentences with other objects in French to show what they like and don't like. For example, J'aime le chocolat - I like chocolate. Je n'aime pas la pluie - I don't like the rain.

In grades 1/2, we have begun looking at emotions and language to describe our emotions. Students have been playing memory games to help retain vocabulary, and throughout the term we will move on to playing charades, writing about when we feel these emotions, and adding them to our Zones of Regulation walls within the classrooms.

In grades 3-6, students have been continuing to describe their gargoyles. We are learning that French sentence structures can be very different to English. In English, we often write adjectives before a noun - for example, 'My animal has green scales.' However, in French, adjectives are often placed after the noun: 'Mon animal a les ecailles vertes' (My animal has scales green).

We are also learning that adjectives need to match the noun in gender (masculine or feminine) and quantity (singular or plural). This is a very foreign concept for most English speakers and the students have shown great resilience and reasoning when writing descriptive sentences about their creatures. I look forward to sharing their finished work with families at the end of term.
