Prep
Literacy
In our literacy lesson, the Preps engaged with the classic tale of "Goldilocks and the Three Bears." We used the story to identify its characters, setting, and central problem. The students also actively discussed the nouns and demonstrated the verbs within the narrative. It became evident that some students were unfamiliar with the concept of porridge, prompting a request to taste it. This presented an ideal opportunity to not only prepare porridge but also to engage in a language-rich experience.
Throughout the activity, the Preps were encouraged to use descriptive language to describe the oats before and after cooking. Some students likened the cooked oats to being mushy, resembling clouds, vomit, and broken-up slime. Once the oats were fully cooked, students had the option to customize their porridge with toppings such as honey, sugar, and banana. Following the tasting session, varied responses emerged: while some enjoyed the porridge, others did not, with some even requesting second and third helpings.
Maths
During our Maths Blast session, the students used ladders to create the backward number sequence of numbers. They were prompted with the question, 'What number comes before ...?'
The Maths focus is partitioning whole numbers between 5 and 10 into two parts. The Preps have used a collection of bean bags and teddies and partioned the collections between two hula hoops. In addition, they used concrete materials to partition collections and then write the matching number sentence. Some students are beginning to notice the pattern when partitioning whole numbers.
Inquiry
We are continuing to discuss the importance of looking after our planet and reflecting on a variety of ways that we can make our homes and everyday activities more caring and sustainable towards the environment. The students have role-played different scenarios and created posters to demonstrate sustainable actions in the home.
