How to read your Progress Report
Your child's latest progress report (GPA) was released last week. You may have recieved an SMS if your child was a high acheiver or they were identified as 'at risk' in the previous cycle.
A full copy of your childs GPA can be found on Compass under the Reporting tab on your child's profile page. You may need to open Compass on a computer, or in browser mode to view this.
A Grade Point Average is a score that the school uses to assess the overall learning behaviour of each student every month through the completion of Progress Reports.
The score is representative of how a student has performed across all of their subjects over the past month.
How are GPAs Calculated?
The GPA is an average of the ratings each student achieves on the three key indicators on the Progress Report. These indicators align with our school values: Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be A Learner. Each of these areas is allocated a score based on the level of performance.
- Always
- Often
- Sometimes
Rarely - Never
- Absent
- NA*
*(Does not affect GPA Score)
For each subject the scores are tallied and averaged by the number of subjects studied. This then gives a score or GPA. As you can see the highest possible score of 4.0 would be generated by achieving “Always” in every area in every subject
Excellent (GPA 3.8 to 4.0)
Students achieving 3.8 or above on their GPA are considered to be performing at a very high level. These students are considered our monthly “GPA All-Stars”. Parents of these students will receive a SMS congratulating their child on their performance and have their achievement published on the school's student management system Compass and the school newsletter.
Above Average (GPA 3.6 to 3.79)
Students achieving 3.6 or above on their GPA are considered to be performing at a high level. This does not mean that there is no room for improvement, but does suggest that the student is on average performing above the standard level of performance.
Average (GPA 3.0 to 3.59)
Students achieving at this level are performing above the minimum standard, but still have significant room for improvement. A close look at the progress report will show strengths and weaknesses. Discussion with classroom teachers should be undertaken to discuss strategies for improving identified areas of weakness.
Under-performing (GPA 2.4 to 2.99)
Students performing at this level are below the minimum expected level of achievement. Consistently performing at this level will probably lead to failing to achieve essential learning outcomes. Discussions with classroom teachers should be undertaken to discuss strategies for improving identified areas of weakness. Team leaders will contact parents of students with major concerns. Many students at this level will be required to attend additional support classes to assist them to move above the minimum acceptable standard.
At Risk (GPA below 2.4)
Students are performing well-below average and are in immediate danger of failing to meet essential outcomes. All students performing at this level will have their parents contacted by the school to discuss how significant improvements can be made. All students at this level will be required to attend additional support classes to assist in moving above the minimum acceptable standard.
Speak with your child about their GPA
We expect that parents talk with their children about their GPA. Examine the progress report closely- look for strengths and weaknesses. Look for patterns, for example is there a problem in all subjects and classwork, if so what do I need to do to improve? Is there a problem in one subject or many? Is the 'worm' (the line graph) going up or down over time?
By reflecting closely on your report you will be able to have a more specific and informed discussion with your child and their teachers about how to improve. The focus of these reports is on improvement- what do you need to do to improve? The Progress Reports are only an indication for you to realise where your strengths and weaknesses are and what sorts of conversations you need to have with your teachers.
The next GPA will be released with your child's End of Semester report.
