Learning and Teaching

with Mrs Amanda Strickland

At St Mary’s, we use the approach known as Teachers as Co-Learners (TCL) to embed the teaching and learning of the Indonesian language across the school. This strategy, which is based on solid academic research and practical teaching methods, involves regular language sessions led by classroom teachers, incorporating effective literacy and language learning techniques.

This approach to teaching and the curriculum it follows are supported by the Science of Learning.

The key components include:

  • Clear and direct teaching
  • Minimising mental strain
  • Continuous feedback
  • Recalling learned content
  • Regular review of fundamental concepts.

Last week, our Family Fun Friday focus was to demonstrate some of the Indonesian words and phrases we have recently been learning. It was wonderful to see all students across the school confidently communicating and showcasing their new-found language skills.

We encourage students to use the Indonesian language throughout all aspects of their day. Ask your child to share the Indonesian words they learned this week and use them in a sentence to show their understanding.
