Year 1 Learns to Be Planet Protectors with Ceres Incursion!
Last week, our Year 1 students had an exciting and eye-opening incursion with Michaela from CERES Environmental Park. Michaela brought her passion for sustainability into the classroom, guiding our young learners through the fascinating world of the 6Rs: reduce, rethink, reuse, recycle, refuse, and rot.
Students explored how everyday choices impact the environment. Michaela encouraged them to 'rethink' their habits, like choosing reusable containers over single-use plastics and to 'refuse' items they don’t need. The students were eager to share ideas on how they could reduce waste at school and home.
One of the highlights was learning how to use the different bins correctly. Michaela helped students understand what goes into landfill, recycling, and compost bins. They practised sorting items and became confident little bin detectives!
Students were amazed as they guessed how long different materials take to break down. From banana peels to plastic bottles, they learned that some items stick around for hundreds of years! This sparked great conversations about making better choices and avoiding unnecessary waste.
Michaela explained what happens to rubbish that ends up in landfill and why it’s important to keep as much out of it as possible. Students were shocked to learn how long some items stay buried and were inspired to do their part to protect the planet.
A big thank you to Michaela and CERES! We’re so grateful to Michaela for her engaging and informative visit. Year 1 left feeling empowered, excited, and ready to be sustainability champions in their homes and classrooms.
Let’s keep the momentum going. Be sure to ask your child what they learned and how your family can practise the 6Rs together!

Sensory Garden
Students in 3/4 recently took their writing outdoors to explore the sounds of their school environment. As part of their learning about narrative writing, they listened carefully to the world around them - from the chatter of students on the playground, to the rustle of leaves in the breeze - and used these details to build vivid descriptions of a setting.
Back in the classroom, they turned their notes into rich pieces of writing, experimenting with sensory language to make their stories come alive. This activity helped students see how paying close attention to small details can transform a simple setting into a more engaging part of a narrative.

In Week 3, as an extension of the Instrumental Music program, the Year 5/6 Band students had a once in a lifetime opportunity to observe a tertiary percussion ensemble rehearse at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. This unique experience allowed the students to observe best rehearsal practise, hear new music, and engage in discussions with the musicians and conductor in meaningful conversations.
Here are a few words from our band captain, Lily A.
“On Friday the 24th of October, the year 5/6 band students
took a bus to Melbourne Conservatorium of Music to watch a percussion ensemble rehearsal.
We were there for two hours, and saw many amazing pieces. The musicians
played a variety of instruments, including drums, marimbas, and cymbals,
creating powerful sounds and loud sounds. It was fascinating to watch how
focused and coordinated the performers were. The experience inspired many
of us to keep practising and improve our own musical skills.”
