Inclusion, Diversity and Respect

Link: Inclusion Diversity and Respect Policy

Eltham High School is committed to creating an environment where all members of our school community are welcomed, accepted, respected, and treated equitably, so that they can participate, achieve, and thrive at school. This commitment towards an inclusive environment should be evident in everyday interactions; the language used within the school community, the curriculum, the messages displayed around the school and the physical environment. Whilst we recognise the role that education settings play in implementing cultural change, the involvement of the whole-school community is required to achieve a culture in which safe and respectful relationships are everyone’s concern and responsibility.

Our Inclusion, Diversity and Respect Policy is accessible on our school website or via the link above and explains Eltham High School’s commitment to making sure every member of our school community - regardless of their background or personal attributes - is treated with respect and dignity.

Child Safety and Wellbeing at Eltham High School: Information for Families and the School Community

Eltham High School is committed to providing an environment where students are safe and feel safe.

Our child safety framework  https://www.elthamhs.vic.edu.au/policies-child-safety/ explains how we support and maintain child safety and wellbeing at Eltham High School.

It includes our:

  • Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy

  • Child Safety Reporting and Responding Obligations Procedures, and

  • Child Safety Code of Conduct, which outlines acceptable and unacceptable behaviours for all staff and volunteers at our school.

Our students and families are important partners in providing a child safe environment. These regular newsletter reminders are one of the ways we ensure our school community is aware of:

  • Our commitment to child safety, and

  • How to provide feedback or raise child safety concerns.

If you have any concerns about child safety at any time, please contact Darren Squires on  darren.squires@education.vic.gov.au .  Any child safety complaints or concerns are treated seriously. For more information about our school’s complaints process, see our Complaints policy available at  https://www.elthamhs.vic.edu.au/policies-child-safety/

We also welcome your ideas on ways we can improve our approach to child safety and wellbeing. If you have any suggestions or comments, please contact Fran Mullins at fran.mullins@education.vic.gov.au

Yard Duty and Supervision

Student safety at Eltham High School is our highest priority and the safe and appropriate supervision of students is an important element of our duty of care to students. Part of this duty is ensuring parents and students are aware of our student supervision arrangements before and after school.

Before school: School grounds are supervised at 8:49am, with supervision provided at entries to the school from Withers Way and Ely Street.

After school: School grounds are supervised after school from the end of the school day until 3:24pm. Again the supervision points are placed at the exits to the school at Withers Way and Ely Street.

Students on school grounds outside these times will not be supervised unless they are attending a supervised extracurricular activity. Parents/carers are requested to ensure that students do not attend school outside of these supervised times unless they are attending a pre-arranged supervised activity (i.e. Music, Drama and Sports programs).

Families are encouraged to contact Fran Mullins at fran.mullins@education.vic.gov.au for more information about the before and after school care facilities available to our school community or if you would like any further information about our student supervision arrangements.

For a copy of our school’s Yard Duty and Supervision Policy please contact the General Office. This policy includes Eltham High School’s student supervision arrangements across the school day, including before and after school.

Volunteers Policy

Link: Volunteers Policy

Eltham High School recognises the valuable contribution that volunteers provide to our school community and the work that we do. The Volunteers policy outlines the processes that Eltham High School will follow to recruit, screen, supervise and manage volunteers to provide a child safe environment, and to explain the legal rights of volunteers. To ensure that we are meeting our legal obligations under the Working With Children Act 2005 (Vic) and the Child Safe Standards, Eltham High School is required to undertake suitability checks which in most cases will involve asking for evidence of a Working with Children (WWC) Clearance and may also involve undertaking reference, proof of identity, qualifications, and work history involving children checks.
