Fantastic 3/4

Term 4 Week 8

3/4 Newsletter

Welcome to Week 8 of Term 4!

Literacy:

After 8 weeks of working our way through The Wonderful Wizard of OZ, and pulling it apart to find out what makes it a quest narrative, we have finally finished the epic quest. Students enjoyed investigating the way that the text followed the conventional quest narrative structure, introduced allies and villains, presented and solved complications for the characters and finally resolved each character’s journey by enabling them to achieve their quest goal. Students also took inspiration from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by creating their own quest narratives. Students independently created a plan, drafted, edited and published their stories all while following the same Quest Narrative Conventions explored through The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Phonics:

In phonics students have been exploring a number of different concepts including Homophones, the effect of the letter ‘l’ when used after an ‘a’ and an ‘e’ and continued developing their understanding of different codes.

Below is a quick explanation of how the letter l influences the sounds the letter ‘a’ and ‘e’ make.

The letter l is tricky; it changes the sounds some letters make, like a and e

When we put an l after an a, it often becomes a unit saying ‘or’ and sometimes ‘orl

al examples: talk, fall, also

That's why we say L stuffs it ALL!

Maths:

In Mathematics, students have been exploring different concepts in Year 3 and 4. Year 3 students have concluded their unit of learning about multiplication and division and the various ways of representing and solving multiplication and division problems. In week 8 they began a unit on measurement, specifically focusing on mass, capacity and volume. Year 4 students have been learning about area and perimeter, and will conclude their unit of learning about mass, volume and capacity next week.

Science

Recently, students have begun creating their Term 4 Science projects. Students will have the freedom to design a poster or a PowerPoint that showcases all the learning that they have done this term. Ranging from food chains and food webs to the impact of humans on different ecosystems, students will use the remaining sessions of Science to create and finally showcase their projects in week 11.
