News from our Year 5 Students

This term, we’ve been exploring the exciting world of Chemical Science. We’ve been asking questions like What could happen when substances react? and How might we know if a chemical change has occurred? Through hands-on experiments, we’ve discovered that reactions can produce fizzing, colour changes, and temperature shifts as new substances might be formed.

In English, we’ve been linking our learning to Procedural Writing. We’ve written step-by-step instructions to explain our science experiments so others can follow them too. We’ve learned how using sequencing words, scientific vocabulary, and clear verbs can help make our writing more precise, just like real scientists!

A few of the experiments that have been done, and one of them was making Invisible Ink. Here is the procedure for it.

Invisible Ink

By Sophie J ,Victoria S Lorenzo M And Josiah H

Ingredients/Materials:

  • 2 pieces of card paper - Victoria
  • Paper Towels - School Supplies
  • Hand sanitizer - School Supplies
  • Large paint Brush - Josiah
  • Small paint Brush - Josiah
  • Popsicle Stick - School Supplies
  • Tumeric - Victoria
  • Baking Soda-Lorenzo
  • 2 Cups -Lorenzo
  • Water - School Supplies

Step 1: Setting Up

Find a flat table/bench and carefully set out all your ingredients from the ingredients list on to the table. Wash your hands so they won't interfere with your experiment, then you are ready to begin!

Step 2: Pouring Water

Carefully pour your water into your cup until it is half-full.

Make sure not to spill any.

Step 3: Add Your Baking Soda

Gently pour around 2 teaspoons of baking soda into the cup. This is for the base, and later on we will use this.

Step 4: Stir It All Up

With your paintbrush stir up your baking soda and water together at a normal pace for around 30 seconds or until it turns a very light, cloudy colour.

This will be the base, and we will save it for later.

Step 5: Grab Your Paper Towel

Tear off a piece of paper towel from the roll and lay it down on the bench/table you are working on.

Step 6: Grab Your Card Paper

Grab your card paper and carefully lay it on top of the paper towel.

Step 7: Write Your Message!

Give your baking soda a quick little stir just in case it has separated, and write your message on your paper with your brush. Keep dipping your brush in the baking soda mix so it is always wet, otherwise it will be hard to read when you reveal it.

Step 8: Set Aside Your Message

Put your message to the side, somewhere where no other ingredients will spill on top of it.

Step 9: Add The Hand Sanitizer and Tumeric

Making sure you are doing this step over a paper towel, pump around 4-5 pumps of your hand sanitizer into your cup. Then, carefully shake 6 or 7 pumps of turmeric into the cup as well, and stir it all together with your popsicle stick, until it turns a deep reddy-orange shade.

Step 10: Wait For Your Message To Dry

Set all your ingredients aside that you have already used so your desk is less messy. We are now going to look at the other experiments

Step 11: Use Your Turmeric And Hand Sanitizer

Dip your big paintbrush into the turmeric and put it all over the page the message will appear.

Step 12: Clean Up

Put everything away and transfer your cups in either your dishwasher or sink, you can do whatever you want with your piece of art ( your invisible ink piece of paper).
