Social Media Ban
Dr Lisa Vinnicombe
Wednesday 10 December
Mark this date in your diaries. This is the date when Australia will lead a world first social reform, by restricting social media access to young people under the age of 16. The forthcoming ban has been an inspiration around the world, with many countries following our lead. It is a bold decision by the Labour government and sends a real challenge to the big tech companies, Meta and Google.
This move signifies a win for research and will bring relief to many families. We have known for years that social media can be a negative influence on young people. Social psychologist Jonathan Haidt lists the major harms as social isolation, sleep deprivation, fragmented attention and addiction. While we know that mobile phones are a part of life and are used every day, there is no doubt that misuse of phones can have serious consequences, particularly for young people.
From 10 December this year, everyone under 16 will be off Tik Tok, among other sites. It is timely for our government to be showing this level of responsibility for our young people, and the move will be applauded by many families and schools.
We hope that parents and families take this opportunity to discuss your child's use of social media and if you are seeking support, please contact our wellbeing leader, Ms Eloise O'Brien, on 9359 1166.
