EXPLORING BIG IDEAS IN NUMBER

T4 2025

At Hackham East Primary School, we are passionate about fostering a deep understanding of mathematics. A key part of this journey is our focus on the Big Ideas in Number (BIiN). But what does this mean for our students and how does it support their learning?

What Are the Big Ideas in Number? The Big Ideas in Number refer to the foundational concepts that underpin mathematical understanding. These include number sense, place value, mental strategies, understanding of operations, and the ability to recognise patterns and relationships between numbers. By strengthening these “big ideas”, students build a strong foundation that supports their ongoing growth in mathematics.

Connecting Goals with Big IdeasEvery student at Hackham East Primary has a maths goal that is purposefully linked to the Big Ideas in Number, ensuring that students are not just focusing on procedures, but also the concepts that make maths meaningful. For example, goals might be set for students’ to improve their understanding of place value so they can confidently solve addition and subtraction problems, or focus on developing mental strategies for multiplication.

Engaging Activities for Every LevelTo support all learners, every student engages in activities tailored to their level. These activities are designed to challenge thinking, encourage collaboration, and consolidate students’ understanding of key mathematical concepts. Whether exploring combinations of ten in or investigating decimal place value, each student engaged in hands-on, purposeful learning linked to their own goals and the broader Big Ideas.

Why This MattersBy connecting maths goals to the Big Ideas in Number, we are supporting students to become confident, flexible thinkers who see mathematics as a connected and meaningful discipline. Our approach ensures every child, regardless of their year level, has opportunities to participate, succeed, and celebrate their progress in numeracy.
