Year 4 Science Incursion at Carlsruhe
On Monday the 10th November, our Year 4 students had an exciting day at Carlsruhe, participating in a hands-on Science Incursion as part of this term’s inquiry unit.
We were fortunate to welcome three educators from the River Detectives program, who led a series of engaging activities focused on environmental science and water ecosystems. Students had the opportunity to investigate aquatic macroinvertebrates (tiny water-dwelling animals without backbones that play a vital role in freshwater habitats). These creatures, found in rivers, estuaries, and wetlands, are essential food sources for platypus, fish, and frogs.
One highlight was the erosion and riparian habitat activity, where students constructed sandy riverbeds and used natural materials to simulate healthy riverbank environments. This hands-on experience helped them understand the importance of vegetation and habitat in preventing erosion and supporting biodiversity.
Another favourite was the interactive water cycle role-play. Using natural resources, students creatively demonstrated key scientific processes including evaporation, transpiration, condensation, runoff, and precipitation, bringing complex terminology to life in a fun and memorable way.
After a morning of scientific exploration, the children enjoyed lunch together and some outdoor playtime at Carlsruhe before 4AD returned to the main campus.
It was a fantastic day of learning, discovery, and collaboration. Well done Year 4!

Red Cross Pillowcase workshop

We are looking forward to our next incursion next Monday, the 24/11 - Red Cross Pillowcase workshop. This workshop will be delivered by Red Cross volunteers, and it encourages children to be active participants in their emergency preparedness. This one-hour workshop helps children to reduce real and imagined fears and support stress management during emergency situations. Each student will be given a pillowcase to decorate and take home, to start their own personal emergency kit.
Pillowcase pictured, was originally inspired by events during Hurricane Katrina in the US. While evacuating campus, students at a local University used pillowcases to carry their cherished and basic possessions.
