WPS Community Children’s Garden

Last week we learnt about grass-like plants that aren’t actually grasses. Although many plants with long strappy leaves look like grasses, many of them aren’t, and this is important to know when weeding.
Quizz:
Question: Which is not a grass?
A | B | C | D |
Yorkshire fog (Holcus lanatus) | Leek (Allium ampeloprasum) | Matt Rush (Lomandra filiformis) | Chives (Allium schoenoprasum) |
Answer: The velvety Yorkshire Fog is the only grass.
Leek and chives are related to onions and garlic and Lomandra, Dianella and others are native flowering plants. Just because a plant has long strappy leaves, doesn’t mean it’s a grass or a weed.
With this in mind we emptied the leek bed and everyone got to take home a leek to make leek and potato soup. NOTE: Our home grown leeks do not have long white stalks, this is because they are exposed to the sun so turn green. All of the leek is edible, white and green stalk as well as the leaves. Enjoy your green leek and potato soup!
