Australian Association of French English Bilingual Schools conference in Canberra

We have had the good fortune to spend three days in Canberra with colleagues from all over Australian and one from New Caledonia to discuss our bilingual and binational models of education.

This Network has the potential to become a powerful model in education with strengths from both the French and Australian/Victorian systems. Now in its tenth year, we are looking to expanding our horizons to welcome schools from Australasia with schools in New Caledonia, New Zealand and Vanuatu.

Our students have already benefited from connections made through the association, notably our our partnership with Killarney Heights. We are hoping to gradually extend this partnership to make meaning connections at each year level so that the friendships between students grows.

Our teachers will be potentially sharing resources such as the French version of the literacy test, Dibels and knowledge of the best decodable readers in French (Highgate Primary School).

Our school continues to benefit from the opportunity to welcome New Caledonian experienced bilingual teachers from the bilingual schools in Province Sud and the pre-service teachers from the University of New Caledonia.

An exciting development has been the possibility of a Year 5 student tour to one of New Caledonia's bilingual schools in 2026!

2026 - Leadership Structure

As you are aware, we have extended our model to ensure that more of our colleagues have a voice in decision making and leading initiatives.

Each leader will have two lenses:

  • An AIP goal - to develop an action plan to achieve the goal. This could be through professional learning, PLC FISO cycles, collegiate observations and coaching / mentoring.
  • Developing self and others: each leader will working with their direct report/s to engage in professional conversations about leadership.

We look forward to all colleagues knowing what the priorities are in 2026 and how professional learning is supporting our team to achieve the AIP.

The 2026 AIP is being developed by our leadership team based on feedback and data from the 2025 AIP.

Looking towards 2026

Teams

We are getting very close to being able to announce our final teams for 2026 (mindful that last minute changes can occur).

It is important to remember that the model that has been developed has been put in place to prioritise

  • students in a bilingual learning environment
  • teacher wellbeing

Intervention

Small class sizes mean that it is highly unlikely that there will be an intervention program. Expertise in Tier 1 and Tier 2 strategies will be a priority.

Professional learning

  • The Multi Tiered Systems of Support to support the implementation of Tier 1 and Tier 2 strategies from Foundation up to Year 6.
  • Supporting EAL learners in class.
