Let's Get Creative!

Creative Edge Competition
Mrs Sumita Quinn | Assistant Head of Primary Curriculum
On Saturday 26 August, the Year 5 and 6 Newton students attended the annual Creative Edge Competition at Curtin University. The King’s College entered two teams this year in Society and Environment and Literature and Communication categories.
Society and Environment’s topic was to prepare a 10-minute production on an event that occurred in history which affected our physical and social environments. The literature and communication topic was to create a 10-minute dramatic presentation portraying an original story written by the team based on their picture. During the presentation, the team must display your picture in a way that allows the audience to see it clearly. The story must include at least two examples of each of imagery and metaphor.
The last challenge that involved both teams was an Impromptu challenge. In this 4 minute presentation, students were handed a prompt, and they needed to work as a team to decipher its meaning and significance before producing a creative solution.
Overall, both teams worked hard in the six weeks leading up to the challenges. A lot of hard work, persistence and a few tears were spent in making their creative production work. Congratulations to all the students and their families who worked tirelessly to make this an eventful day.
Write a Book in A Day Competition
In this competition, writers turn their words into prizes with awards for the best books in each division and for top fundraisers through sponsorship. Money raised through competition entry fees and sponsorship funds vital scientific research for childhood cancers. The more money you raise, the greater the benefit to kids with cancer.
On Tuesday 19 September, a small group of Newton students participated in Write a Book in a Day. Our parameters for the book included a main character who was a painter, another character who was a songwriter, a wombat, the setting was in a laneway, and the issue was a shipwreck. The writers had also to include some form of Australian context to the story and have certain words that were mandatory in their story. We began brainstorming ideas from 8am to 9am. When students completed their Freytag’s Pyramid of Events, each student took on writing a chapter. The story created was titled "Song of a Mother". The story took an entire day to craft and write, with students arriving at school at 8am and finishing the book at 5:25pm. Overall, it was an exhilarating day.
Drama Club Performance
Corinna Herbert | Head of The Arts
The TKC Drama Club provides a nurturing and supportive place for students to push their creative boundaries and build confidence through the art of drama. Students enjoy developing their skills as an actor along with the art of directing and working behind the scenes. This immersion in theatre allows them to develop an understanding of the production process and fosters leadership and teamwork.
The Drama Club students are to be congratulated on their outstanding performance of “The Crossroads”. The collection of short scenes was acted, directed and produced by the students with the technical support of Mr Paul Kennedy and students from the Creative Club.
