Hello from 5L

We have had a great start to the year in 5L, getting to know each other and settling into the rigour and routine of senior school.

Year 5 students have been busy preparing for NAPLAN, which is coming up in a couple of weeks. We completed some practise tests and used the data to help decide what we should focus on to help students feel more prepared.

We also started our new spelling program – Spelling Mastery. Every morning from 9-9.30 students participate in structured literacy, in mixed groups across the Year 5 cohort. The program is fast paced, repetitive and covers phonemic awareness, rote spelling of irregularly spelled words and morphology. We have been focusing on strict routines for this program and all students have made an amazing start.

One of the best things about moving up to Year 5 is having iPads! We have just finished setting up and assigning iPads to each class. In Year 5 we use these for a range of programs and apps, uploading work to Google Classroom and completing research projects. We are all looking forward to using them throughout the year.

Our Year 5 Play Leaders have just begun their training. The Play Leaders help make the yard a fun and safe place for the students at Langwarrin Primary School by running games and activities for junior students one lunch time a week. The play leaders spent the day learning leadership skills, team work and how to facilitate games for the younger students. They did such an amazing job today working with a Year 1 class - we can’t wait to have them out in the yard running the program next week!
