Update from our Careers Adviser

On Friday 21 February, it was a pleasure for Miss O’Loughlin and myself to accompany 26 Year 12 students who attended the ‘Discovery Day’ at the University of Wollongong. There were several lectures that students specifically chose. From Education, Drama, Law, Chemistry and a Campus Tour to name a few. The whole point of the day is that students experience university life for a day. There were 1500 students from around NSW who attended that week. Our students had a great time and learned a lot.
Year 12 are about to apply for early entry into university and also apply for UAC (if they want to go to university post-school). The process will be explained and a university presenter from Western Sydney University and the University of Wollongong will explain the process later in the year at school.
We have had 20 students with successful applications to study a course through TAFE (EVET) for their 2025 pattern of study. There are various courses including Information & Digital Technology, Automotive, Early Childhood Education and Care, Beauty, Fitness and more.
Next term ‘Start Your Future’ will commence for 8 weeks. It is an opportunity to experience a taster course for various TAFE courses and involves students going to TAFE one day a week (8.30am to 4.30pm). There are 5 courses to do at Campbelltown TAFE. Students must be 15 years of age or older and can do a different course each term. See Mr Melluish or Mrs Skeggs for more info!
Many students have volunteered to do work experience this year. This has led to several apprenticeship opportunities or jobs in retail. If any student wishes to do work experience, they can come and see Mr Melluish (Careers Adviser).
There will be two Careers expos later this year. One at Minto for Years 10 to 12 and one at Homebush for Years 11 and 12 students. Many people from universities, various jobs, police, defence force, apprenticeships, TAFE etc will be there.
The ‘Unserious Careers Talk’ was on Thursday 13 March. We had Alana Kilmartin from Unserious Careers who is endeavouring to do her presentation to 250 schools. We are number 36. Thank you to Kate Rowe from the Educational Pathways Program who also attended and who organised Alana to present to all Year 11 and 12 students. Students enjoyed her presentation on career paths post Year 12. Alana was impressed with our Year 11 and 12 cohort.
Careers lessons commence next week with Year 10 students and will continue during the year. They focus on resumes, job interviews, subject selections, job prospects and tertiary options.
The White Card Course was on Wednesday 19 March. This enables students to work on construction sites and be aware of the work, health and safety concerns/hazards they will be confronted with. There will be another opportunity for students to complete the White Card Course later in the year.
Two students are attending a Pre-Apprenticeship Construction Course at Airds High School this term and two students are attending Productivity Bootcamp which may lead to apprenticeship opportunities. Each week they focus on a different trade. We wish these students the best of luck in these opportunities.
