NASCA Report

This term, NASCA students have had the honour to continue working with and learning from Josh Sly, a well known and respected Indigenous mentor who shares the beauty and wisdom of Indigenous culture with our students. These fortnightly visits are filled with learning, music, and celebration as we explore Indigenous song, dance, and the unique sounds of the didgeridoo. The students are really enjoying learning new dances and are truly showing their talents in this area, picking up the moves and the stories and language behind the dances.

The boys have thoroughly enjoyed and were excited to learn how to play the didgeridoo. Under the guidance of Josh, they learnt the techniques to produce the unique sound, a skill that takes practice and patience. It was amazing to see the boys connect with the instrument, some of them quickly picking up the rhythmic breathing and creating their own sounds.

The girls participated in an essential oils workshop with Trinity from Island Bliss Oils, learning about the therapeutic properties of essential oils, as well as talking up the strengths of our women on International Women's Day. The room smelled divine afterwards!

All the students have had the chance to participate in art sessions, including working on a design for the upcoming polo shirts for the T-RED NASCA program. They have also started to learn the art of making traditional Indigenous jewellery. Guided by staff, the students used natural materials such as beads, shells and feathers to create beautiful pieces. Each student carefully crafted their own necklace or bracelet. This creative experience not only taught valuable crafting skills but also deepened the students appreciation for the rich traditions of Indigenous artistry and the connection between craftsmanship and cultural identity.

We're looking forward to an amazing year ahead, filled with opportunities to learn, grow and teach about the beauty of Aboriginal and Torres Strait culture.
