Learning and Teaching

Maths News
Welcome to another school year sure to be filled with lots of great learning!
This year, we will continue to explore the Science of Learning and high impact teaching strategies to ensure that our students are active participants in the learning process at all times. We will be incorporating regular reviews so that students have the opportunity to rehearse and retrieve information often and provide opportunities for frequent checks for understanding to ensure that we are targeting their needs.
This week, Melinda Buscema, Nicole Webb and Anna Hendy will be attending the first of four professional learning days; ‘Masterclass Series in High-Impact Instruction’. We will be supported to build more high-impact instruction into our classrooms, which will complement the work we are already doing at St John’s. We look forward to sharing our learning throughout the year!
GRIN - Getting Ready In Numeracy
We will continue to provide the intervention program called GRIN - Getting Ready In Numeracy to small groups of students from Year 2-6. This program helps students get ready for learning by preparing them for their upcoming maths lesson; familiarising them with key concepts and vocabulary and modeling what they can expect to see or do in the lesson. Our past participants noticed a big improvement in their numeracy learning and confidence.
Congratulations to our new Maths Leader, Chelsea
Chelsea was an enthusiastic participant in our Maths Extension Group in 2024 and really enjoys a challenge. She definitely taught me a few things!!
I am very excited to be working with Chelsea to help bring even more energy and excitement into Maths at St John’s in 2025.
Keep your eye and ear out for some exciting things happening this year in Maths:
Maths Day
Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge (Year 3-6)
Australian Mathematics Competition (Year 3-6)
Maths Challenges
And lots more!
I look forward to working with everyone again this year, for another year of growth, learning, and excitement!
