This Weeks Gospel

This weeks Gospel is from Luke 5:1-11. It is an important one for our school community as it tells the story of when St John was first called to follow Jesus.

"For he and all his companions were completely overcome by the catch of fish they had made; so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were Simon’s partners. But Jesus said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; from now on it is people you will catch, to bring the Good News.’ Then, bringing their boats back to land, they left everything and followed Jesus."

In this week's Gospel John and James are first called to follow Jesus, along with Simon, which is the beginning of St John's ministry. John was a devoted follower of Jesus. Together with Peter and James, John was a witness of the raising of Jairus daughter. With Peter he helped to prepare for the Last Supper sitting close to Jesus during the meal and later accompanied Jesus while praying in the Garden. He was the only Apostle present at the foot of the Cross, accepting the guardianship of Mary, Jesus mother. Together with Peter he went to the empty tomb witnessing the first signs of the Resurrection. In art, St. John is depicted with the symbol of an eagle, a bird that flies to great heights, symbolizing “the height he rose to, in his gospel.”
