First year of VCAL at Mazenod College
These students are among the first group to study The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL), introduced to Mazenod College in 2003. The VCAL pathway suited students intending to train at TAFE, apply for an apprenticeship or go straight into the workplace after completing Year 11. It provided them with the opportunity for ‘hands-on’ experiential learning by combining school, TAFE and the workplace in one program.
The first VCAL teacher at Mazenod was Ms Vivian Seremetis. At the end of the year, VCAL Student of the Year, Sam Murphy, expressed his appreciation to Ms Seremetis saying ‘Thank you for the past year. Little do I actually see what you do for me and the rest of the blokes but I know you have put your head on the line for us on occasions and supported us. Thank you for the great year that I have had and [for] making my last year at Mazenod awesome, leaving me with so many memories.’ Ms Seremetis is now Careers Coordinator at the College.
The VCAL program has recently transitioned to The VCE Vocational Major and the Victorian Pathways Certificate but its aim remains the same in providing an alternative pathway for students seeking a more practical option to the regular academic pathway.
