Staff In the Spotlight

Introducing.....Louisa Pennell, English and English as an Additional Language Teacher

Why did you decide to become a Teacher?

I became a teacher in my 30s, having worked for community organisations and in publishing in Australia and overseas. At that point, I guess I felt I had something to offer, some life experience. I wanted to help support and inspire students the same way I was supported and inspired by my favourite teachers. I also wanted to share my passion for stories.

How long have you been a Teacher?

I've been a teacher for 14 years!

What was your last place of employment - school/university or another organisation?

Aquinas College was my last school.

What do you love most about being a Teacher?

When a student has a breakthrough moment

What has been one of your best teaching moments?

Having a breakthrough moment with the whole class who were learning how to write an essay.

What would be 3 things that you would like the students to know about you

  1. I love reading and stories.
  2. I know that not everyone loves reading but most people enjoy a good story.
  3. I once got lost in Siberia – it’s a great (true) story!

Where is your favourite holiday destination?

Anglesea in winter; Mornington Peninsula in summer.

What TV show/series did you last binge watch?

On the holidays I watched The Last Dance documentary about Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. Having no interest in basketball whatsoever, the fact that I found it utterly compelling is testament to the power of great storytelling!

If you could wear Harry’s invisibility cloak for one day, where would you go and what would you do?   That’s Harry Potter’s cloak not Harry Ruff’s cloak 😊

I’m also a Beatles nerd so, if I’m allowed to go back in time, I would go to the Abbey Road studios during the recording of Sergeant Pepper.

What is the one piece of ‘advice’ or the one thing that you always say to your students?

Approach tasks one step at a time, especially if they’re overwhelming.

Thank you Louisa, and welcome to Mullauna College.
