Why did you decide to become a Food Technology Assistant?
I decided to become a Food Technology Assistant because I have a special interest in children and young adults’ nutrition and cooking education. I am currently an early childcare cook and have a cooking and hospitality background. I have a passion for getting young people excited about the world of food and am looking forward to facilitating this life skill in Mullauna’s Food Technology classes.
How long have you been a Food Technology Assistant?
Last year I volunteered in the Food Technology room at Mullauna Secondary College, and I loved the role. I have now taken the opportunity to be part of the Food Technology team.
What was your last place of employment?
I also work as an early childcare cook. Both jobs fulfill my passion of working with young people and getting them excited about food.
What do you love most about being a Food Technology Assistant?
I enjoy seeing the sense of pride that the students gain from cooking a meal successfully. It is really satisfying to know that they are developing cooking skills they will keep for life.
What has been one of your best moments in the Food Technology classroom?
During my time at Mullauna last year, my best moments were when students took the initiative to request extra ingredients to enhance a dish. Whether it was as simple as adding extra sugar for sweetness or vinegar for sharpness, it demonstrated their understanding of balancing flavours. It excites me to see them thinking holistically about a dish to achieve the perfect balance.
What would be 3 things that you would like the students to know about you
Where is your favourite holiday destination?
Inverloch.
What TV show/series did you last binge watch?
The Day of the Jackal.
If you could wear Harry’s invisibility cloak for one day, where would you go and what would you do? That’s Harry Potter’s cloak not Harry Ruff’s cloak 😊
I’d spend the day in Rome, hopping from restaurant kitchens and gelati bars, sneakily eating my way through the city whilst picking up cooking tips and secrets from chefs and Nonnas alike!
What is the one piece of ‘advice’ or the one thing that you always say to your students?
Be creative and resourceful in your cooking. Don’t run to the shops just to buy one or two ingredients that a recipe calls for. You’ll be surprised at what you have on hand to replicate a dish, and it’s so much more satisfying putting your unique spin on a meal.
Thank you Bianca, and welcome to Mullauna College.
