Back-to-School Tips for Online Safety
While getting ready for a new school year often means organising supplies and uniforms, it’s also a great opportunity to review your child’s online safety and address potential challenges before they arise. Here are some practical tips to help you start the year on the right foot:
1. Share Responsibly
It’s exciting to capture first day of school moments, but be mindful about what you post online. A school logo, uniform, or even a familiar background can share more information than you might realise. Ask your child if they’re okay with you sharing their photo, this not only shows respect but also helps them understand the importance of consent.
2. Recognise the Signs of Cyberbullying
School can sometimes be a tough environment, especially if your child encounters bullying online. Signs of cyberbullying may include secretive online behaviour, avoiding school or social outings, changes in grades, or sudden shifts in their friend group. Stay alert to these indicators and talk to your child if you notice anything unusual.
3. Set Healthy Screen Time Limits
With screens playing a bigger role at school and home, it’s important to balance online and offline activities. Establish screen-free zones in your home and set clear “switch-off” times. Remember, quality matters more than quantity when it comes to screen use.
4. Use Parental Controls and Privacy Tools
Take advantage of parental controls on devices, apps, and games to help limit exposure to inappropriate content and manage screen time. Check that privacy settings are activated, and teach your child how to block or report inappropriate behaviour online.
5. Stay Involved in Their Online World
From the moment your child starts using a device, talk openly about online dos and don’ts. Let them know they can come to you if they ever feel unsafe or unsure. Building strong communication and taking an active interest in their online activities will help establish trust and support.
