Volunteer Child Safe Training - Term 1 Sessions

Dear Parents and Carers,

We greatly appreciate the valuable contributions of our volunteers in supporting our school community. As part of our commitment to child safety, all volunteers must complete annual Child Safe Training before working with students. This requirement applies to all volunteers, including those assisting in programs such as:

·         Afterschool Basketball (coaching/team management)

·         Art room support

·         School events (e.g., Cross Country, Athletics, excursions)

·         Other classroom or extracurricular activities

If you are considering volunteering in any capacity, please ensure your training is up to date. If you are unsure of your current training status, please check with the staff member who has invited you to support the program or event.

Additionally, if you volunteer at another Department of Education school, please note that training must also be completed at the school where you volunteer.

Term 1 Volunteer Child Safe Training Sessions

All sessions will be conducted online via Webex. Dates and links can also be found on the Sentral Parent Calendar. Please note these sessions are not recorded, they are presented as live sessions.

🌱 LITERACY

This week, we are starting to read mentor texts that will guide our Reading, Writing and Language Conventions lessons. Grade 5s will be reading War Horse by Michael Morpurgo and Grade 6s will be reading The Silver Donkey by Sonya Hartnett.

In Reading, we will read the novels together as a whole class and in partners to ensure that we are reading fluently. There will be a focus on analysing the text for rich vocabulary and figurative language.

In Writing, we will focus on narrative writing, particularly on the development of ‘author’s voice’. We will be expanding our ideas with interesting detail by using elements of figurative language and ensuring our stories start with captivating beginnings.

What you can do at home

Ask your child to share what they have read about in the mentor texts during week. Enable them to read texts of their interests on a daily basis and talk to them about what they’re reading and why.

🌱 NUMERACY

This week, students will unpack properties of number, working with multiples, factors and indices to solve problems. A large focus will be placed on working through the vocabulary and steps required to solve multi-layered, real world questions. Students will continue to have the opportunity to collaborate on challenging maths tasks, requiring a growth mindset and positive dispositions.

Grade 5 students will also be upacking NAPLAN questions; focusing on understanding what the question is asking them to find, recalling the numeracy skills required to solve it and the steps involved.

What you can do at home

Discuss the importance of slowing down to understand the problem at hand. It may be the language that gives clues about how to solve the problem or it could be a multi-step problem. This will assist in your child understanding the strategy needed to find an answer.

🌱 CBL

Our Big Idea for Term One is 'Connections'.

Throughout the term, students will be exploring the Big Idea through a range of topics related to civics and citizenship, including; democracy, government and laws. To help guide our inquiry we will use the questions and statements below:

Essential Question:

How and why do people connect to achieve laws in society?

Guiding Questions:

- What does it mean to be a citizen?

- What is democracy in Australia and why is voting in a democracy important?

- What are the roles and responsibilities of the different levels of government and how do they connect?

- How are laws developed and enforced?

 🌿 REMINDERS

🌱 Please assist your child in ensuring that their iPad comes to school every day, fully charged.

🌱 Thanks to the many families that have already brought in tissues and wipes. If you have not been able to already, we would greatly appreciate your contribution.

🌱 Please ensure your child has their sun smart hat at school.

🌱 Please refer to the email communication (12/2/25) in regards to giving permission for allowing connection for your child's iPad to Moysle. This permission must be given before your child can bring their iPad into class.
