Adelaide Zoo Excursion - Exploring Animal Classification and Lifecycles!

On Tuesday 4 March, our Year 3/4 students embarked on an exciting adventure to the Adelaide Zoo to explore the fascinating world of Animal Classification and Animal Life Cycles.

The day was packed with hands-on learning, observation, and discovery. Students split into small groups, each guided by a staff member or a parent volunteer.

Throughout the day, our curious learners navigated the zoo, stopping at various enclosures to observe the unique features of different animals, study their habitats, and note key details about their life stages. The informative plaques at each enclosure provided valuable insights, helping students understand how each species grows and develops in their natural environment.

One of the highlights of our visit was a presentation led by a Zookeeper, during which students delved deeper into how animals grow and change over their lifetimes. Through a series of student-directed inquiry activities, we explored the fascinating journeys of several species, with a focus on some of the incredible parents in the animal kingdom and the unique methods they use to care for and raise their young.

It was an educational and fun-filled day, and we couldn’t be more proud of how our Year 3/4 students engaged with the material and asked insightful questions!

What did the Year 3/4's like most about the Zoo Excursion?

  • Brooklyn S: I loved seeing the pandas because they were a new addition to the Adelaide Zoo!
  • Ethan H: This was my first time visiting the Adelaide Zoo, and I really enjoyed seeing all the animals, especially the capybaras.
  • Hamish C: I really liked the Zookeeper’s presentation because we learned fascinating facts about different animal lifecycles, including lizards and stick insects.
  • Liané S: I loved seeing the maned wolf because I had never seen one before. I learned so much about its features.
  • Jeremiah G: I enjoyed seeing the reptiles in the reptile house and the sea lions. They were huge!
  • Kara M: The meerkats were amazing! They moved so fast and stood on their back legs to observe their surroundings and us!
  • Joie T: I loved seeing all the animals! One of my favourites was the penguins. They were so cute. The bird show was also really interesting!
  • Thomas K: We got to see the new pandas at the Adelaide Zoo! They were absolutely adorable.
  • Lais G: The meerkats were my favourite animal to watch. I just wanted to give them a big hug! I was also fascinated by how such tiny stick insects lay their eggs.
  • Enoch L: I really enjoyed seeing all the smaller animals in the nocturnal house. It was so cool to watch them move around in the darkness during the day!
  • Phillippa-Grace L: I loved seeing the different play areas designed to keep the animals entertained. It made me wish I could be one of them and join in the fun!
  • Steven S: The venomous snakes were so interesting! We got to see some of them move around, and a few were absolutely massive!

Our students’ curiosity was otter-ly unstoppable, and now we’re standing tall like a giraffe for more!
