Reimagining our Acknowledgement of Country

At the commencement of this year, we as a staff team were challenged by our Acknowledgement of Country, an embedded practice within our ELC daily rhythm. We were challenged with wondering; ‘Is our Acknowledgement of Country placing God at the centre?’

Sharing and collaborating as a team, we all were provided an opportunity to provide feedback, with many members feeling that God was not currently at the centre of our embedded practice. This led to the development of a new Acknowledgement of Country written collaboratively.

Placing God at the heart of all we do, has provided an anointing on our morning gatherings. Not only are we committing our day in prayer, but we are acknowledging that God is our Lord and Saviour and that we have been blessed to learn and play on the land that has a rich partnership and connection with the Kaurna people.

Within Class Three Yellow, we have committed to strengthening our practices of placing God at the centre of all that we do, and we have done this through our interactions, provocations and programs.

One way we have done this is by spending time interpreting the Aboriginal Flag through the lens of the three colours and their representations: The land, the sun and the people and guiding children through their learning and awareness of God’s creation. The land element alone allowed our children an opportunity to reflect on the wonders that surround us at ELC, with many making the connection that at Emmaus we have God’s creation surrounding us.

Our ELC Acknowledgement of Country

Here is the land, here is the sky.

Here are my friends and here am I.

We acknowledge God as our Lord and Saviour.

Thanking the Kaurna people for living and

Caring for the land on which we meet today.

We honour Elder’s hearts and minds

May they continue to teach us, wise and kind,

We give God the glory as He wears the crown.
