Grade 1 Community News

Dear Grade 1 Families,

We can hardly believe the term has come to an end! We are incredibly proud of each student and the amazing learning that has taken place.

InitiaLit

In InitiaLit, we have been exploring compound words, nouns, verbs, and reading two-syllable words. We've also started learning a new digraph, which can be a bit tricky! This digraph has two spellings for the same sound: ‘ai’ represents /A/ in the middle of a word, while ‘ay’ represents /A/ at the end of a word. Students have actively participated in lessons and consolidation tasks to deepen their understanding of these concepts.

Maths

In maths, students have been building on their understanding of two-digit numbers, learning to compare them to identify the smaller of two numbers represented in multiple ways. They have also been exploring different types of 2D shapes and their properties.

Knowledge Building

Our Grade 1s have been building their knowledge of the world around them by exploring what makes each continent unique. They have been identifying and discussing famous landmarks and notable places, as well as native plants and animals and how they shape each continent. Using a world map, students have been identifying and locating these continents and discussing each continent’s location using the compass rose.

Respectful Relationships

In Respectful Relationships, our students have been exploring different strengths an individual can have and identifying their own strengths. We have also continued to explore our school value of Respect.

Digital Technologies

In Digital Technology, students have continued to look at different ways to stay safe online and the importance of communicating anything worrying to a trusted adult. You can support your children at home by continuing these conversations about online safety, and identifying who they can speak with at home if they feel unsafe at any time while they are online.

Vocabulary

In Week 9, we introduced new vocabulary to our Grade 1 students while exploring the text Fang Fang’s Chinese New Year. In Week 10, we delved into Josephine Wants to Dance. Students examined target words closely and engaged in various word association activities to deepen their understanding.

Incursion

The Grade 1 incursion was a fantastic success! It was wonderful to see the children having so much fun while learning different ways to create beats and exploring strategies to help them stay calm and focused.

Thanks for your continued support!
