Prep Community News
Dear Prep Families,
As we approach the end of the first term, we couldn’t be prouder of our preps for their incredible hard work and dedication to learning. They’ve put in so much effort, and they truly deserve a well-earned break! We are all eagerly looking forward to the upcoming holidays! Here’s a glimpse of what we’ve been learning so far:
English
In our InitiaLit program, students have been focusing on blending sounds in words. For example, when we say the word "sun," we break it down into /s/, /u/, and /n/ before blending them together. We’ve also been exploring the sound that the letter ‘t’ makes. You can support your child at home by asking them to identify objects in the room that start with the /t/ sound and practicing air writing the letter 't' while saying, “T says /t/.”
Maths
In Maths, our preps have been diligently mastering counting every day and learning to write numbers through fun rhymes! We’ve also been diving into 2D shapes, specifically circles and rectangles. We discussed the properties of these shapes, such as how a rectangle has four sides—two short and two long—while a circle is defined as a curved line that loops back on itself.
Other Areas
We’ve been learning to identify nouns in sentences, understanding that nouns name a person, animal, place, or thing. Additionally, we’ve started exploring verbs! You can support your child at home by discussing nouns and verbs in everyday sentences. In Digital Technology, we are getting hands-on with iPads, learning how to unlock and lock the device, identify its different parts, take photos, and plug in headphones.
Take Home Reading
We encourage students to read each night to enhance their skills and foster a love for reading. Each student will have a designated day to change their reading books. Please remember to bring book bags on that day so teachers can check reading journals and help your child select new books. It’s important to record the number of nights your child has read and to sign off on it. We’ll be awarding certificates to celebrate special milestones for nights of reading, so let’s keep up the great work!
