Grade 5 Community News

Dear Grade 5 families,
The end of Term 1 is here! We would like to express our gratitude to all our families for the support they have given to their children during the term. Especially during the NAPLAN testing period, Athletics Carnival and Harmony Day celebrations.
Knowledge Building
During week 9 and 10 we have been reading How Was That Built? PLC 5 has been learning about the importance of the foundations of buildings and some amazing structures around the world such as the Metropolitan Cathedral in Mexico City and The Shard in London. During sentence level writing we have been learning about the importance of good note taking and practicing these skills as we read the text.
Mathematics
In week 10 year 5’s have been looking at three-dimensional (3D) objects, students have been identifying, describing and making nets for three-dimensional objects. This builds on Year 4 content of identifying, naming, describing, and classifying 3D objects, including prisms, pyramids and platonic solids. This close examination of the structure of 3D objects leads into work on cross-sections in Year 6.
Vocabulary
Over the past two weeks the students have been learning 6 new words each week from the text How was it Built? Students look at the meaning of the words, synonyms and antonyms for the words, and how to use the words in sentences. They are then using these words in their writing and reading.
Reminders
- Student journals will not be being sent home this year.
Students will write their reading in the journals when they arrive at school each day.
