Grade 3 Community News

Dear Grade 3 Families,
End of term is here! We are so proud of all our students' efforts in getting into their learning routines, achieving many learning goals and completing their first-ever NAPLAN assessments. As we near the end of term 1, our Grade 3 team thank you for all your support over the Term. We are proud of the effort and accomplishments our Grade 3 students have achieved so far.
We wish you all an enjoyable break with loved ones!
NAPLAN
With NAPLAN completed, we are proud of students' efforts in these formal assessments. For our grade 3 students, it was one of their first formal assessments. They showed exceptional preparation, respect, responsibility, and effort during it.
Many parents/carers have asked when NAPLAN results will be released. We have not been given a specific date. Last year Victorian students' NAPLAN results became available in mid-July. All students who participate in NAPLAN receive an individual report of their results. More information regarding NAPLAN results can be found below on these websites.

Knowledge Building Unit - Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening.
Students have enjoyed the engaging learning in our class novel Matilda. In reading lessons, students have been working on their reading fluency, summarising, inferring and sharing what is happening in the text. When inferring students are practicing combining both their background knowledge and clues in the text to respond to how a character is feeling or share what they think is happening in the story.
In Writing students have been planning and drafting their persuasive texts using paragraphs and language features. Students have been learning to organise their writing by using topic sentences to introduce their main idea, engage the reader and outline what their next sentences will be about.
Numeracy – Time
The past few weeks, students have enjoyed the time learning activities during our maths lessons. We have discussed reading the time on digital devices and using their knowledge of hours, minutes and seconds to estimate the duration of events such as how long it takes to pour a drink of water, brush their teeth, watch a soccer game or go camping over a weekend. Students have further developed their problem solving by practising planning an event, such as a class party, using their expanded learning of understanding the duration of time for different events.
Vocabulary
This term our target words are provided from our novel study Matilda. Our week 9 words were formidable, nimble, tremendous, drastic, boasting and distinctly. Our week 10 words are appalling, fond, mild, witty, arrogant and eccentric.
Students enjoy sharing their learning of these words with you and we encourage you to support and surprise them by using these words when the opportunity presents.
Friendly Reminders
● We ask students to read for 10 minutes each school day and then record their reading nights in their student reading journals that we keep at school to track their reading nights. Young readers who read frequently develop essential reading skills.
● We thank and remind families to continue to support their children in charging their iPads ready for each school day.
