Grade 3 & 4

Term 2, Week 2

Welcome back to an exciting and jam packed Term 2! The children have settled well back into the routines of school and are looking forward to a fabulous term of learning.

English

In Reading this term, we are focusing on Vocabulary and Comprehension of fiction and non-fiction text. Students will learn to use strategies such as reading on, sentence clues and looking at the base words to work out the meaning of challenging vocabulary. Students will also make inferences using their own knowledge and information from the text. In the coming weeks, we will be assessing the students' reading and comprehension in preparation for reports.

In Writing this term the students have been exploring fiction texts and how an author writes with different sentence fluency. The students are being explicitly taught that sentence fluency is one of the traits (skills) that writers need to be able to create expression and add meaning to their writing pieces. Sentence fluency focuses on the way the words and phrases flow throughout the text. They are crafted well built sentences with varying sentence lengths and varied sentence beginnings. Later in the term our writing focus will change to another writing trait: word choice. Students will have opportunities to explore specific vocabulary that a writer needs in order to convey meaning. We are enjoying reading all of the different writing pieces the students have written as their choice is so varied and based on their interests. This is one of the strengths of our writing program at BPS where students have choice!

Maths

Our current focus in maths is fractions. Students will be investigating how to:

Describe what the numerator and denominator are and represent

  • How to read and write fractions in numbers and words
  • How to represent fractions of a whole (eg, 3/8 of a pizza) and of a group (eg, 1/3 of the grade)
  • Find equivalent fractions using a model (eg, that ½ a cake is the same as 2/4)
  • Placing fractions on a number line, for example placing ¾ on a number line between 0 and 2

Later in the term, we will be looking at Addition, and Subtraction. We are going to have a fantastic and informative Term 2!

Inquiry

In our Inquiry sessions, we are investigating ‘How do we get there?’. Students will be involved in creating tables, graphs, and maps that follow standard cartographic features such as borders, scales, legends, titles, and north points. They will also use tools like grid references and compass directions to interpret spatial information and draw conclusions about Australia and the wider world.

We are looking forward to a really exciting term! Wishing our students and families the best for the term. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Year 3 & 4 Team.
