Highlighting Humanities
This week was a whirlwind of excitement and engagement as students took part in this year’s highly successful HASS Week. With a jam-packed schedule of lunchtime events, students had the opportunity to explore different aspects of the Humanities through fun and interactive activities.
The week kicked off on Monday with a screening of Horrible Histories, complete with a popcorn feast. The room was overflowing with students eager to enjoy the humorous and sometimes gross side of history. It was fantastic to see so many students having fun while learning about the past!
Tuesday brought out the competitive spirit with a Family Feud-style historical quiz. A great number of students joined in, demonstrating impressive knowledge across various historical periods. In the end, the Year 10 team of Phoebe Monk, Gidon Bogoyev and Indi Caudo emerged victorious, showcasing their expertise in all things history.
On Wednesday, creativity was in the spotlight as students participated in a business logo design competition. The students’ business knowledge and entrepreneurial talents were on full display. The winner was Leilah Pooley.
Thursday’s event, Trump Talk, saw a classroom full of students eager to discuss current world affairs. Mr Maddess led the lunchtime discussion, answering insightful questions about tariffs, Trump’s comments Gaza, and the ongoing war in Ukraine. The level of engagement was remarkable, with students showing a deep interest in global issues and politics.
Friday saw the most delicious and visually impressive events of the week — the Geo-Cake Bake Off! Students were challenged to create cakes decorated as landforms or landscapes, combining their baking and geography knowledge. The entries were stunning, with students showcasing remarkable skill and creativity. After much admiration (and eating!), the winners were declared: Ellie Hardy (gold), Charlie Rhodes (silver). Elektra Louw (bronze). Thank you to all who participated!
To wrap up HASS Week, the Year 7 students stepped back in time with an Ancient Civilisations Costume Parade. Dressed in costumes inspired by their studies on Ancient History, the Year 7s gathered in the Cafeteria for a parade and history-themed games. The enthusiasm and effort put into the costumes were outstanding, making it a tough decision to select a winner. In the end, Elektra Louw was crowned champion and awarded a golden laurel crown.
A massive thank you to all students who participated throughout the week, and special thanks to the parents who assisted with costumes and baking, and to Year 9 Sebastian Kinnear for capturing all the highlights with the school Canon all week. Finally, a huge round of applause to the Humanities teachers for their dedication in organising such a fantastic celebration of the Humanities.
