Co-curricular Sport Information

Head of the River

Congratulations to all our rowers who competed at the Head of the River last Saturday 15th March.  It was a fantastic day with Loreto hosting the event for the first time. As the host school, we were required to cover many roles leading up to and on the day of the event. Having over 100 volunteers generously offer their time speaks volumes about the strength of our Loreto community. It was wonderful to see so many of the Loreto community in attendance enjoying the day. It was very special to witness staff, students, parents, and both current and former rowing families unite to successfully host this event.

Loreto Pink and Green netball

Last September, a group of excited Year 2 students took the court for their first ever netball training. This summer they made their debut for Loreto in the Eastern District Netball Association’s Friday night competition.

It’s fair to say that they had a ball!

Thank you so much to our coaches Sheridan, Hayley, Katrina and Claire. It has been wonderful to see the players improve each week, have fun, develop teamwork, learn the rules and belt out the Loreto song with gusto.

A child’s first experience in any sport is so important and the coaches play a key role in this. If players have a positive experience and have fun they will come back – sport will become an important part of their school life. At Loreto, the Year 2/Year 3 summer netball season is particularly important as it is the first opportunity to play a team sport for the school.

It has been great to see our players have such a fun first season. They have loved playing and look forward to trainings each week. Hopefully the confidence they gained this summer and the fun they had will mean that they are comfortable trying other Loreto team sports in the future, as well as netball. The school is so grateful that we have parents willing to give up their time for the benefit of the students.

The Pink and Green teams played each other in a high standard match recently. After the game they linked arms and sang the song together as one.

P.S. Not that it is all about winning at this age… but it is worth mentioning that the teams finished 1st and 2nd on the ladder.

Premiers!

Congratulations to our Loreto Red Year 5 netball team who were crowned premiers of the Primary 3 division after an undefeated season. The players gelled quickly and maintained an excellent standard throughout the season.

Thank you to coaches Charlotte and Elise. They had a lot of players to juggle but shared opportunities around and we saw all players develop their game during the season.

Undefeated seasons are rare at any level and in any sport – the girls should be extremely proud of their efforts.

Netball Finals

Good luck to our Loreto Gold and Loreto White Year 6 teams who play in semi finals tonight. Both teams started the season slowly but have clicked into gear from December onwards. Hopefully peaking at the right time! If the teams are successful they will move through to the preliminary final next week and beyond that, the grand final on April 4.

Well done also to Evie H, Tiana N and Helen C who made summer finals for Garville. They unfortunately went down to Jaguars by 3 goals but had a great season and will be together again in winter.

Student Achievements and Performances

If your daughter is involved in a sport or activity outside of Loreto that you would like to share, please send details through to Ben.Johnswood@loreto.sa.edu.au.

This could be club sport or dance, calisthenics, gymnastics, swimming, chess, surf lifesaving, horse riding, athletics, surfing, cycling, skateboarding, taekwondo, Lego building… basically any activity you can think of! We would love to be able to acknowledge their achievements in our newsletter. It’s also great for other girls to see all the different activities that are out there. They might see something they’d like to try.

Performing Arts

Save the date

Wednesday 9 April is the date of our evening Pre-Generations in Jazz Concert with Rostrevor College. Taking place in the Performing Arts Centre at 6.30pm, this concert will feature six Loreto and three Rostrevor ensembles, all of which are travelling to Mt Gambier on 2 May to compete in the annual Generations in Jazz Festival.

Admission is free; however, we ask that all audience members book a ticket so we can establish audience numbers. Tickets are available here: https://events.humanitix.com/rostrevor-college-and-loreto-college-pre-generations-in-jazz-concert

 SACE Drama Production

The 12 Drama class have been working incredibly hard to bring the SACE Drama Production to the stage. Talking to Brick Walls is a hybrid verbatim play about the dynamics between parents and teenagers. Teenagers are changing, asserting their independence and working out their identities... but they still need their parents. Meanwhile, have they ever really thought about how hard it is to be a parent? Really??

The piece was co-created by eleven young artists alongside facilitators Claire Christian and Ari Palani over a period of three and a half months. This is the conversation they wanted to have.

The production takes place in the Performing Arts Centre at 6pm on April 2nd and April 3rd (Wednesday and Thursday Week 10). This is a free event and no tickets are required.

Beatboxing Workshop

Our Vocal Ensemble girls were treated to a beatboxing workshop with professional beatboxer, JOBE. The girls were introduced to the basic skills of beatboxing and JOBE demonstrated some of his incredible and diverse skills in vocal percussion.

Year 10 student, Charlie, is featuring some beatboxing for one of the songs that Vocal Ensemble 2 is presenting at this year’s Generations in Jazz Festival in Term 2. Charlie was treated to a special one-on-one lesson with JOBE to develop her skills further.

All the girls involved had an amazing time and found the session really opened up their awareness of vocal percussion and how it can be implemented in their choirs and ensembles.

Loreto student performs at the Fringe

Year 10 student, Mia, has recently performed at the Adelaide Fringe Festival as part of a dynamic foursome of young singers. Mia wowed the crowds with her stunning vocal skills as the teen vocal group Harmonious took the audience on a journey through the decades from the 1940’s to the 2000’s; performing songs by musical icons of the times such as The Andrews Sisters, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, ABBA, The Cranberries and more! We are all very proud of Mia!
