Year 5/6 Bulletin

A SNAPSHOT into the year so far….
This year has started off great with many things for our year 5/6 students to experience and be a part of.
Wellbeing and settling in
Both classes have been working on class expectations and group work.
The children worked collaboratively together to establish:
- What makes a great classmate?
- What makes a great teacher?
- What makes a great classroom?
Each child was able to add what they thought for each and then worked in groups to establish common themes for each.
We found that above all, the children valued respect, safety, trust, honesty, kindness, organisation, support and humour within their learning environments.
What you can do at home to continue this learning experience:
Have conversations with your child/ren around what they value, and think is important for their learning journey.
Encourage them to reflect on their day and set mini goals about what they could work on and what might need further development.
As citizens we all have rights, roles and responsibilities to be actively informed and uphold the values of Australia’s democracy.
Driving questions:
- What is a democracy?
- dictatorship
- communism
- democracy
- What are the roles and responsibilities of democratic government?
- Federal
- State
- Local
- What does it mean to be a responsible citizen of Australia?
- values
- beliefs
- Role of the child
- Role of the parent/adult
As a cohort we unpacked the Big Idea statement to better understand it and to discuss our thoughts around it.
Questions such as:
- What are our roles and responsibilities? How do we know what they are? Where can we find out?
- What is a democracy? Does Australia actually have a democratic system?
- How are we actively involved?
What you can do at home to continue this learning experience:
Have conversations with your child about some of the roles and responsibilities you have as an adult.
Explore ways in which you can contribute and be actively involved as citizens of Australia.
Discuss different political systems and forms of government.
Buddies
Every year the 5/6 students get buddied up with a prep child.
We try to meet fortnightly with our buddies. During these planned sessions we play games, share our learning, and work on various projects together.
The students have not yet been allocated a buddy but will be soon.
Here are some snaps of us getting to know one another with the prep cohort.
Swimming
Years 3-6 have started the year off with the Swimming Program and the Swimming Carnival.
The Carnival has an amazing day. A BIG THANK YOU to all the parents/carers that have assisted with both the lessons and the carnival.
The highlight of the carnival was by far the parent/teacher versus students race... parent/teachers won!
