(Conclusion/ Endings)
When approaching writing at the beginning of the year, we focus on formation of the Trait “ideas”. Students often use picture or word prompts in order to come up with ideas for their writing. It can be challenging for students to;
- Begin writing with an idea for a narrative.
- Be able to take their imaginations and ideas and then narrow these ideas into a succinct piece of writing that makes sense and isn’t too long.
We plan with students using various different strategies and find what works best for individual students. Some of the planning documents which we have used with students are below.
Part of this process is important as it prepares students to learn to plan and then sustainedly write for NAPLAN. Within the writing NAPLAN prompt, students will either receive a narrative prompt, or a persuasive. As a result, in the beginning of the year we introduce students to strategies in order to understand and plan for both.
Above is an example of the Homework that was provided to students last week. This also provides an insight into the expectations of our writing sessions when planning narratives. Rather than focusing on the bulk of the text, we centre the learning about creating and narrowing ideas using a picture or word prompt as a guide.
