Learning Intention:To interpret a display of data using picture graphs.

Learning experience overview:

As a part of our current unit on Measurement, we have been naming and ordering the months of the year and noting individual birthdates, and when they fall in any calendar year.  Each student decorated and labelled a cupcake template with their day and month of birth. We have been exploring the presentation of this data to create a display of the birthdays in each class, by month. Each class created a Year 2 Birthday (picture) Graph (images above) using individual cupcake images. They were then asked to interpret the data presented on the graph.

Prompts/questions/responses:

  • What does this graph tell us?  How can we read it?
  • Which month has the least/most number of birthdays?
  • How many people have a birthday in XX month?
  • Does every month have a birthday?
  • How many students have a birthday in the same month as you?

What you can do now (to continue the learning at home from this experience):

Buy/obtain a cheap calendar that your child can keep and use as their own. Write down all your family’s/pets’ birthdays in the correct months.  Include grandparents and extended family birthdates as well.  Find other special days/occasions/dates that should also be noted. If your child has a regular lesson or activity, note that down too, on the correct days.  Try to make it as meaningful as possible, in line with your child’s interests, so that they will learn to use it as a reference.

Using a calendar, ask your child to find:

  • their birthday month
  • how many days there are in their birthday month.
  • various months, -the month before XX, the month after XX
  • Australia Day in January
  • how many days there are in a particular month.
  • what day of the week a particular month begins on
  • Anzac Day in April
  • which months have the same number of days?
  • what day of the week their birthday falls on

Continue to encourage your child to use their calendar, and the days of the week and months of the year, as reference points for discussion.
