On Tuesday 5th March the Marine Ambassadors went over to Mentone Primary to learn how to teach younger peers (grade 1’s) about the ocean and environment. The reason we went today was to learn how to spread the message of how to help our marine environment. We learnt all about the ocean and we learnt how to be teachers. When we got there, there were about six seven different school’s marine ambassadors. Altogether there were 41 students. Firstly, Jaqui showed us some guidelines on how to teach younger students. She taught us early about how we should speak clear, respond enthusiastically and expect the grade one’s unrealistic ideas Then we all learnt about different marine animals such as the Australian Sea Seal, the Eleven armed sea star, decorator crab and the smooth ray stingray. The animal that I learnt about the most was the eleven armed sea star, the eleven armed sea star is called that because it has between seven to fourteen arms and eleven is in the middle. After that we went outside to have a quick eating break and many of the junior students were very interested in us and had a curious look on their faces and one even came up and asked us some questions. There were some funny kids going around whispering to each other looking at us like we had three heads. Next we went to the other room to practise together, we were with Chris and she was telling us what to do, everyone got to volunteer on things to present. After we had a run through on roles we had todo. My job was to be a hungry dolphin that kept getting given litter instead of squid. I had to get a volunteer and dress them up as a decorator crab with paper streamers. A decorator crab snips off seaweed and coral and sticks it to its back. They looked really funny because the streamers were too big. But they just laughed it off and sat back down again. Finally, it was time to make our presentation to the Year 1s. We were feeling a bit nervous about it but we had practised a few times and felt we knew our information. The Year 1s came into the room and we had to get them organised…that wasn’t that easy but they listened and participated in all the activities. It was a great day and we now as your ambassadors are going to come to your classrooms to do our presentation over the next few weeks. There are so many things we can do to help our marine environment - we hope that you come with us on this journey to help save our planet. On Fridays Ms Peppard is having a Sustainability Gardening Group. If you are interested in getting involved, come along at first play. By: Ed Timms, Lucian Hendricks, Eliza Loadman, Gigi Maziano
