Being Systematic: Planning for Success
One of the most valuable habits we can develop in young people is the ability to approach challenges in a thoughtful, structured way. At All Saints’ College, we describe this as being systematic.
Being systematic is a key element of the Quality Thinking competency. It is the habit of using a method or plan to work through a challenge. Students learn to break down tasks, organise their thinking and move forward with purpose, bringing calm and clarity to complex learning.
This focus is strengthened through our work with the New Metrics for Success project. Recently, our New Metrics Project Team attended a two-day seminar at the University of Melbourne, where our processes were reviewed alongside those of other schools as part of the Australian Learner Competency Credential (ALCC) warranting process. We are pleased to share that All Saints’ College has been approved to co-warrant the University of Melbourne credential again in 2026 and is on track to award the ALCC to 17 of our current Year 12 students.
Being systematic underpins this work. It ensures students have structured, repeated opportunities to build and demonstrate their thinking over time and across contexts. Students develop this competency across many learning areas in the Senior School, and it is particularly visible in Mathematics, where success depends on following logical processes, applying clear strategies and checking work carefully.
Parents and caregivers can support this at home through simple prompts:
What’s your first step?
How will you organise your time or ideas?
How will you know you’re on track?
These questions encourage students to plan, monitor and refine their thinking, helping them become more independent and confident learners.
As we continue to embed competency-based learning, being systematic remains a key habit that supports success at school and beyond.
