Year 9 News

It has been an exciting and varied term for our Year 9 cohort, with students engaging in learning and co-curricular experiences. In Outdoor Education, students explored Tarra-Bulga National Park and Wilsons Promontory. Students are also preparing for Morrisby Profile testing in Term 3, which will support future pathway conversations by identifying strengths, interests and possible directions. Across the school, students continue to demonstrate positive engagement through SWPBS, earning KPA recognition, and have represented the College in AFL and soccer, showing teamwork and sportsmanship. Excitement is building for the upcoming Melbourne Discovery Camp.
Tarra-Bulga National Park hike
In week 6, a class of Year 9 Outdoor Ed students visited Tarra-Bulga National Park to complete a bushwalk as part of their studies. During the excursion, students applied navigation and hiking skills while exploring the park's rainforest environment. The experience supported their understanding of outdoor recreation and environmental awareness.
“The Tarra Bulga walk was a fun adventurous walk. Me and my friends had fun walking around multiple paths and we saw a beautiful waterfall. We also learnt about how to deal with leeches! Some of my friends were lucky enough not to be bitten by a leech. Overall, Tarra Bulga walk was extremely fun, and I would do it again.” – Declan M
Hiking Camp
During Week 8 (this week), a class of Year 9 Outdoor Ed students are visiting Wilsons Promontory National Park to complete a series of hikes across its coastal and bushland trails. The experience will challenge students physically and mentally as they navigate various terrains and spend time in a unique natural environment. I have no doubts that students will return to school with plenty of stories to share, along with a few blisters and some well-earned sore legs after a big day on the tracks!
Morrisby Testing
During Term 3, all Year 9 students will complete their Morrisby Profile testing, an important career planning tool designed to help students better understand their strengths, interests, and future pathways. The results provide valuable insights into potential career and education options and will support students as they begin making decisions about their senior years of schooling. We encourage parents and carers to start having conversations at home about future careers, interests, and aspirations, as these discussions play an important role in helping students explore their options. Further information about the testing process and how to access results will be provided throughout the term.
School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)
It has been fantastic to see the year 9 students working hard and showing determination to display all of Kurnai’s four pillars. The top 5 KPA earners in year 9 are recognised and rewarded every week at our cohort assembly. Keep up the great work legends!

Melbourne Discovery Camp
Year 9 camp will be a discovery camp to Melbourne ran through the company DOXA. Students will get the opportunity to explore venues such as the Queen Victoria market, Melbourne Cricket Ground and Eureka Skydeck.
This camp is closely approaching, and students are growing more excited!
Just a reminder that if students are misbehaving on camp, parents may be called to pick them up from Melbourne.
Interschool Sport
Year 9/10 boys AFL
A group of Year 9 students recently represented the school at the Year 9/10 Boys’ School Football competition. The team competed strongly throughout the day, recording one win, one draw and one loss across their three matches. Students demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and teamwork and represented the school positively. Well done to all students involved.
“Our school footy team had a great day competing against Lavalla, Sale Catholic and Maffra. We finished with one win, one draw and one loss, and played some good footy throughout the day. Everyone had fun and it was a good experience taking on some strong competition with my mates. – Jie A
Year 9/10 Boys and Girls Soccer
Students recently represented the school at the Year 9/10 Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer competition. The boys’ team competed strongly throughout the day, finishing with one win and three losses. The girls’ team showed great effort and determination in their matches, recording two losses. It was great to see students who had never played soccer before giving it a red-hot go!
“At school soccer, we had a group of year 9’s from Morwell and Churchill campus combined and went to the Traralgon soccer grounds and competed against a range of schools like Sale college, Sale Catholic, Lavalla and Maffra. At the end of the day, we went 1 win and 3 losses.” – Jaxon B
“The year 9 girls and boys from Kurnai College attended school soccer this term. The girls’ team didn’t have much luck throughout the day and lost all our games. Apart from losing, we all enjoyed our day and were extremely grateful for the opportunity to try out a new sport.” – Pippa M and Ebony L
Expectations
As a cohort, we have been focusing on key expectations for our Year 9 students. The three main areas we are working on are: arriving at class on time, bringing all necessary equipment to class, and wearing the correct uniform.
Over the last few weeks, the year 9 students have been struggling to wear the correct uniform.
Just a reminder that students need to wear the correct shoes (Closed shoes). The following shoes are not part of Kurnai’s clothing policy: Ugg boots, Crocs, Thongs, sandals, steel-cap boots.
Students also need to ensure they wear either white or blue jumpers under their uniform.
Thank you for your support in this space.
