A message from the Principal

Learning in the wild

One of the things I love most about this time of year is seeing our classrooms spill out into the wider world. While so much important learning takes place within the four walls of our classrooms each day, some of the most memorable and powerful educational experiences happen when students have the opportunity to apply their learning in authentic settings.

This week, our Year 5 students travelled to Kryal Castle to immerse themselves in the world of Medieval Europe. After spending weeks learning about the feudal system, the Black Death and life in the Middle Ages through their Humanities studies, they had the opportunity to step back in time and experience these concepts firsthand. Whether it was learning from an apothecary, exploring medieval craftsmanship, watching combat demonstrations or taking part in traditional games and dance, the excursion transformed classroom knowledge into a living, memorable experience.

Tomorrow, our Year 3 students will head to the South Melbourne Market to support their inquiry learning. This local excursion gives students the opportunity to explore the role that markets play in our community, connect classroom learning with the real world and experience one of Melbourne's iconic institutions firsthand. Looking ahead, our Year 5 and 6 students will also proudly represent SKiPPS at the annual Tommy Lahiff Football Tournament, with the boys' competition taking place next Wednesday and the girls' competition on Friday. These events provide wonderful opportunities for students to challenge themselves, work together as a team and enjoy healthy competition alongside students from schools across our local network.

The learning doesn't stop there. Next week, our Foundation to Year 3 students will begin their annual swimming program at MSAC, with Year 4 to Year 6 students taking part the following week. While swimming is an important part of the Victorian Curriculum, it is also one of those rare areas of learning that has the potential to stay with children for life. Developing confidence in the water, understanding how to stay safe around beaches, pools and waterways, and building resilience through trying new skills are all invaluable outcomes that extend far beyond primary school.

At SKiPPS, we are passionate about providing a broad and balanced education. Academic learning is at the heart of what we do, but we also know that excursions, camps, sporting events and community experiences help students to make connections, develop confidence, build relationships and create lasting memories. They encourage curiosity, independence and a sense of belonging, while helping children see that learning doesn't just happen at school - it happens everywhere.

One of the commitments we have made as a school is to include the cost of these rich learning experiences within the annual parent payment contribution requested at the beginning of the year. Our aim is to reduce the need for repeated requests throughout the year and to ensure that every child can access the full range of opportunities on offer. I would like to sincerely thank all of the families who have supported the school by making this contribution. Your support allows us to continue providing the diverse, engaging and high-quality educational experiences that help make SKiPPS such a special place to learn and grow.
