CAREERS

BY RACHEL WHITWORTH & CHAUNTELLE WOLFAARDT (CAREER ADVISORS)

From the Himalayas to BHCS

We start this week with an incredible story of grit and determination!

Bianca A, a Year 12 student from Melbourne, has just made history by becoming the youngest Australian to ever summit Mount Everest.

Reaching the top of the world’s tallest peak (8,849m) on her second attempt, Bianca’s achievement is a powerful reminder to our students: whether you are navigating the "death zone" of a mountain or the nerves of your first job interview, success comes to those who persevere. Bianca’s focus on her goal, despite the record-high numbers of climbers and extreme conditions, serves as a brilliant inspiration for our students to go hard after their own dreams.

Year 9 Mock Interviews

This same spirit of bravery was on display right here on Friday, May 22nd. Our Year 9 students participated in our Mock Interview program in the school restaurant. It was a milestone day—some students faced their fears, while others relished the opportunity to talk about their passions and skills!

The Pathways Team at BHCS is committed to providing these real-world opportunities to our students. As highlighted in recent article by OECD:

"International research shows that teenagers who work part-time alongside their full-time studies can expect to do better when they enter the workforce as young adults... Part-time work can help students to build technical and soft skills, develop social networks of value and enhance confidence in career planning." — OECD Education Policy Perspectives, February 2025

Year 10 Work Experience

We want to build on the momentum from the Year 9 interviews by looking toward our Year 10 cohort. Just as the OECD research suggests, real-world experience is a vital foundation for future success.

A friendly reminder to all Year 10 families that the deadline for all Work Experience paperwork is this Friday - 29 May 2026

Securing these placements is the next step in translating the skills learned in mock interviews into a professional environment.

We truly believe in the Work Experience program as it is an incredible experience that builds such powerful skills!

A Massive Thank You to Our Volunteers

Finally, an event like the Mock interviews is only possible with the support of our fantastic community. We want to extend our deepest gratitude to the ten interviewers - parents, staff, and regular community contacts—who generously volunteered their time to mentor our students.

Thank you to: Peter, Matt, Carolyn, Keren, Erin, Meg, Daniel, Antoinette, Julia, and Mary.

We hope every student who participated found it to be a beneficial and empowering experience!
