Electrotechnology Students visit North East Link Tunnel Project

On Wednesday 3 June and Thursday 4 June 2026, our first and second year Electrotechnology students participated in an industry excursion to Spark North East Link – providing a valuable opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-world experience.
The first-year students started their visit at the Watsonia Information Hub, where they explored the project overview, viewed the latest construction progress and learned how the community can access project information and updates. The visit provided students with a greater understanding of the scale and significance of Victoria’s largest road infrastructure project.
Both first- and second-year students then travelled to the Watsonia Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Training Room, where they met the TBM Electrical Superintendent, an electrician and an electrical apprentice. The session was a highlight of the excursion, with students gaining firsthand insight into the electrical trades and hearing about the experiences, challenges and rewards of working on a major infrastructure project. The electrician and apprentice shared valuable advice about career pathways, apprenticeships and the skills required to succeed in the industry.
The excursion concluded with a bus tour of the Northern Ventilation Building (NVB), the Alternate Motorway Control Centre and Zones 2 and 3 of the project. Guided by Site Engineers, students viewed the significant progress being made across the construction sites and learned about the complex electrical and engineering systems required to support the future operation of the tunnels.
The excursion gave students a unique opportunity to engage with industry professionals, explore career pathways and witness large-scale electrical infrastructure in action. We thank the Spark North East Link team for their hospitality and for providing such an informative and inspiring experience for our students.
