2024 has been a great year for Sport at South Oakleigh College, with many fantastic team and individual achievements.

In our Interschool competitions, we had five teams win their Monash Division competitions – Year 7 Boys Tennis, Year 7 Boys Table Tennis, Year 7 Boys / Mixed Hockey, Year 8 Girls Netball, Intermediate Boys / Mixed Hockey. We also entered teams into additional competitions at the Volleyball Schools cup and Boys Netball Gala Day, where we performed extremely well.

At the Monash Division Cross Country, we were the overall winner, which included winning the Year 9 & 10 shield, and narrowly finishing second in the Year 7 & 8 competition. Ryder Rutledge, Lucia Shaw, River La, Patrick Small and Evangelos Panagiotou all won their events.

Across the Athletics Carnivals, we achieved outstanding results. We took a team of 60 students to the Monash Division Carnival, and won 35 events, with 20 students progressing to the EMR Carnival and winning nine events. The highlight of the Athletics competitions came at the State Carnival, with Will Amiatu - state Champion in two events, Sophie Volpert - state Champion in one event and second place in another, Lucia Shaw - state champion in one event, to go with a 2nd and 3rd place finish, and Serana Barratt - a fourth place.

I’d also like to acknowledge the achievement of Campbell Brown, who recently represented Australia in the Boys Netball competition.

OUTSTANDING SPORT ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

Eli Franzke

During Eli’s time at South Oakleigh College, he has excelled in a variety of team and individual sports. While consistently competing with determination and at a high level, he has also done so with fairness and showcasing our school values. In recent years, he has devoted a significant amount of time and hard work to pursue his passion for volleyball, where he has represented Victoria and received MVP awards in tournaments representing the school. He has also used his expertise to patiently work with other students to coach and develop their skills. Eli has also been accepted into the Centre of Excellence Volleyball program in 2025, where he will continue his development in the sport. We wish Eli all the very best and thank him for his contribution to the South Oakleigh College sports program during his time here.

2024 will also mark my last year in the role as Sports Coordinator. I would like to thank the principal team of Helen, Mark and Tony for appointing me to this position, and for their support over the last five years. I’d also like to thank the teaching staff, who I rely heavily on to run our House Carnivals and Interschool sport competitions, and who have made an invaluable contribution.

Sport is a passion of mine, but I also see it as a fantastic vehicle to promote teamwork, communication, leadership and resilience. When I reflect on my involvement in our sports program, I have had many rewarding experiences that I am very grateful for, and for that I thank the involvement and enthusiasm of our students.

I wish the staff and students all the very best in 2025, and I will be following closely to see the ongoing success in our team and individual competitions.
