Junior School

- Mr Stephen Nelson, Head of Junior School

Junior School Uniform

Our two-week ‘period of grace’ with summer/winter uniform options is finished.  All Prep to Year 6 students are now required to be in full winter uniform on days they do not have P.E. or House Sports. There appears to be confusion and mixed messaging around wearing blazers at the Junior School, with many students opting for a College jumper with no tie.  In Term Two and Term Three, blazers and ties must be worn, including to and from school.  An iteration of our winter uniform is a jumper that can be worn under the blazer but not replaced as the outer garment.  We have a proud, warm and functional winter uniform.  Our requirement is that it is to be worn correctly by all our students.  Your support with this is much appreciated.

Spotlight on Myrniong Learning

Year 1

In mathematics, students are building a vocabulary related to number concepts. Some of these terms include ‘increase’, ‘decrease’, ‘partitioning’, ‘subitising’, ‘sequence’, and ‘number bond’. They enjoy using these terms in context in our mathematics lessons.

Year 5

In Literacy, we have commenced an author study.  The author is Jackie French.  As a part of our learning during this unit of work, we are learning to collect and gather information, analyse (look closely) at a variety of novels and picture books written by Jackie French and will conclude with an oral presentation about the skills we were required to use as we built our author study portfolio.  There are 5 set tasks that will make up the portfolio, inclusive of drafts and a PowerPoint to present while speaking orally.  Some of the tasks are data charts, a biographical paragraph and a Venn diagram to demonstrate similarities and differences between the texts. During the introduction to Jackie French, we were all surprised by the knowledge we already had about the author.  We are looking forward to learning new skills as we endeavour to build a deeper knowledge and understanding of the life of Jackie French and her writing techniques.

Absenteeism and College Sport

As winter sports commence, a reminder of the College guidelines for student absenteeism and College sports.  If a student is absent from school due to illness or kept home from a College sports day, they are not permitted to attend a training session or competition match on that day.  We ask all Junior School parents to support these guidelines and to be proactive with their communication with team coaches and managers if children will not be attending training or matches.

Frozen Jnr Trivia Question #3

Our third trivia question for students to answer - Which Frozen character said ”Some people are worth melting for!” ?  Answers can be placed in the House letterboxes in the Myrniong hallway.

Hockey

Division 4 Foxes and Wolves played a high-intensity and entertaining match in the first local derby of the season. Max Cameron led the scoring with a hat-trick, complemented by Hugo Cameron, who added another goal.

Hartley Johns was the player of the game for the Foxes for his well-rounded performance and his ability to involve all teammates in the play.

Best on the ground for the Wolves were Poppy Edgar and goalie Lachlan Pickford.

Congratulations to Max Cameron and Hugo Cameron on making the South West Country Eagles u/12 representative hockey team.  The boys will compete in the Victorian Junior State Championships from 5 to 7 July.

In Division 5, the Panthers had a tough match against a strong Dunkeld team being defeated 6-0. All Panthers put in an enormous effort and improved throughout the game, while displaying great teamwork and sportsmanship.  Bobby Giles was player of the match for his excellent work in defence.

The Tigers had a great first game against Coleraine Maroon, going down 3-1.  It was wonderful to see the new players have a go and be supported by the more experienced players.  The goal scorer was Will Brown.  Players of the match went to Harriet King for her excellent attitude and stick skills and Charlie Wall for implementing the skills we have been working on in training in his first game of hockey.
