Spotlight on Learning

Stage 1

After a well-deserved break, students in 2B were recharged and ready to start Term 2.

In writing, we have spent the first week exploring our new text ‘Nian, the Chinese New Year Dragon’. Students have been learning about representations by creating their own characters and settings. They have thoroughly enjoyed drawing their own dragons and have been learning how to use noun groups and prepositional phrases to describe their settings.

Our current focus in mathematics has been equivalency, where one side of the number sentence is equal to the other side. Students have learned how the equals sign means ‘the same as’ and have used their understanding to create addition and subtraction number sentences that are equivalent.

Stage 2

The students of 3S returned to Roselea rejuvenated after their two-week break, ready to dive into new learning. The week kicked off with the introduction of the class novel "Wandi" by Favel Parrett. This engaging book is perfectly suited for our Year 3 learners, featuring great examples of descriptive and figurative language. Moreover, the author enriches the narrative with captivating facts about dingoes, which the students found particularly entertaining. Inspired by these fascinating facts, the 3S students crafted detailed factual descriptions of dingoes.

In recognition of ANZAC week, the 3S students engaged in a meaningful art project, creating mosaic poppy artwork. Understanding the significance of this special day, the students expressed their respect and appreciation by writing heartfelt messages on the back of their artwork, further deepening their connection to this national commemoration.

Stage 3

Term 2 has seen the start of Stage 3 students delving into the realm of informative writing, focusing particularly on the text "Bright New World." This has been an exciting journey as students explored various aspects of informative writing, honing their skills in presenting facts and concepts in engaging and comprehensible ways.

Students have been immersed in dissecting the text "Bright New World," analysing its themes, key ideas, and the author's arguments. Through close reading and discussion, they have gained insights into how informative texts are structured and how authors use evidence to support their claims.

In their research tasks, students have been challenged to craft informative pieces inspired by "Bright New World." They have demonstrated a keen ability to gather information, organise their thoughts logically, and communicate complex concepts clearly.

A group of Stage 3 students will also be starting the Maths Olympiad this term. The selected students have been informed and were selected based off school assessment data. We wish these students all the best!
