EMR FINALS

Lawn Bowls

The Coles Bowls Academy (CBA) embarked on its 4th year in the EMR Bowls Competition. After a series of trials and training sessions, selected students displayed a great deal of enthusiasm and motivation to compete for the College. On Monday the 22nd of April at Ringwood Bowls Club, the weather was superb, and it was a successful day all-round for our students and the 12 teams competing on the day. The most pleasing aspect for the competition was the fantastic sportsmanship and passion displayed on the day by our students. The senior team of Max S, Austin L & Kai T (Yr 11) had an amazing campaign, beating last year’s winners from Doncaster SC in their sectional game. This lead to a huge amount of momentum moving into the Grand Final, narrowly beating Lucas H, Jack C & Jack H on the final end. In the junior section, all teams were in the running to progress through to the state finals on Tuesday the 7th of May. The winning junior team consisting of Archie C, Fletcher D and Jake H (Yr 8) who kept their composure in the Grand Final, with a gallant effort from Grace G, Grace F, Yana T and Olivia M (Yr 9) who then finished runners up! Thank you to the Heatherdale Bowls Club for their continued support of the CBA, and we look forward to many students continuing with this great sport for years to come!

Intermediate Boys Baseball

The Intermediate Baseball Team came into the EMR finals full of confidence having played together for several years prior and many on the team playing for their local club. With the bats alive and some impressive fielding, Vermont SC got off to a great start with a win in our first game against Mullauna College. Our second and final pool game against Balwyn HS was a tight affair, with both teams scoring in the early innings. After a solid 3rd inning, we found ourselves up by 1 run moving into the final inning. Although Balwyn HS strung multiple hits together and scored 3 runs, the final inning was incomplete at the end of the timed game, resulting in a win to Vermont SC and therefore progressing to the grand final against Blackburn HS.The grand final didn’t start the way we would have hoped, as Blackburn began the 1st inning with aggressive hitting and base running, scoring 5 quick runs and Vermont SC only scoring 1 in reply. The starting pitcher for Blackburn was an incredible talent and proved difficult to hit against. However, with some fantastic perseverance and disciplined at-bats, we moved into the bottom of the final inning needing 3 runs to win. With a new Blackburn pitcher on the mound, Vermont’s hitters got the job done in sensational style scoring 4 runs to win the game! The next challenge for this team is the State Baseball Finals on Wednesday the 22nd of May at Cheltenham Baseball Club.

Well done to the following students for playing their part in this winning team: Ali C, Jack C, Archie D, David H, Lachlan H, Josh K, Zach K, Luke M, Emmanuel N, Evan R, Xavier S, Will S, Liam W.

Intermediate Girls Softball

Intermediate Girls Softball – Eastern Region Competition

Our girls continued on with their strong performances in the second round at the recent EMR softball competition.  Our first game up saw Vermont with a very convincing win against Doncaster East. The girls all played extremely well as a team unit, with everyone contributing with some great fielding, hitting and base running.  Special mention to Caitlin who hit two huge homeruns in the game!  Next up was a much closer game against Balwyn, which really came down to the wire.  We were down in the early stages, but again with great team spirit, the girls fought back to hit the lead and then showed serious grit to hold them out and win by a run. Special mentions to Otie for a fantastic catch down the 3rd base foul line, and also to Amber for her brilliant first base work.

This win put us into the final against Brentwood.  As expected, this was a very tough game, and our girls fought hard the whole way.  Unfortunately Brentwood did get the better of us on the day, but we are extremely proud of the efforts of all the girls in the team in achieving the runners up title at EMR.  Special mentions to Olivia for her outstanding catching for much of the day, and to Nat for her great pitching efforts.  The team in fact performed so well that they have received an invitation to compete at State, so our journey continues!  Best of luck at State Vermont!

SENIOR ROUND ROBIN

Netball

The senior girl's netball round robin played on Friday the 3rdof May was a very successful day for Vermont! Playing games against Highvale, Glen Waverley, and Mount Waverley both the A and B teams walked away with a victory. The B team had convincing wins against all 3 teams winning by over 10 goals in each game. The A side had a great start to the day winning their first 2 games comfortably and came up against Highvale in the final match on the day. Finishing the first half down by 1, the girls managed to pull together a great win by 6 goals putting them through to Regionals in August! Thankyou to Ms Macfarlane for her expert coaching on the day and congratulations to all the girls who played.

Australian Football

The VSC Senior boys AFL team took to the field last Friday the 3rd of May in what turned out to be glorious conditions at Wellington reserve. At this level we usually play three matches but, on this occasion, only Highvale and Mount Waverley were in attendance. We played 2 matches of 4 x 10-minute quarters.  VSC has a strong senior side and were able to win against Highvale in the first game by 12 goals and a similar margin in the second game. We were able to trial players in a range of positions, some that they would not usually play in which was nice to see. Given we rotated the team so much it is hard to isolate players that played very well on the day but Lucas H of Y11 demonstrated excellent skill and poise. Well done to the team for their professionalism and mature conduct on the day and thanks to Mr Ben L for his goal umpiring on the day. I look forward to the next round which is usually the biggest test of the series of match days.

Soccer

Senior boys

The Senior boys narrowly missed out on progressing to the second round in a penalty shootout. They were undefeated for the day due to strong team play and great keeping but couldn’t quite break through on the other end. They finished the day with 1 win and 2 draws which would ultimately see them in a deadlock that would be broken by a special penalty shootout with Mt Waverley. The boys represented the school with pride and should be commended on their great effort.

Senior girls

Senior girls soccer had a fun but tough day out at Monash Soccer Fields. The team finished the day with 2 losses and 1 win. Two goals from the silky skills of Nazia and one powerful goal to Mahi were the highlights of the day. Well done to the team for their persistence and positive attitude throughout the day!

Badminton

On the 3rd of May, the Senior Girls and Boys badminton teams embarked on a thrilling competition at Kilsyth Badminton Stadium. The day kicked off with Round One against Mount Waverley, where the girls showcased their skills by tying with 3 games won and 3 lost. Despite this, they secured a remarkable victory by just 2 points, marking a triumphant start to the day. The boys mirrored this success against Mount Waverley winning by 4 points, displaying remarkable teamwork and resilience. However, Round Two presented the toughest challenge yet against Glen Waverley, resulting in losses for both teams. Despite a challenging moment involving a blood nose incident with one of the boys, the team's spirit remained unbroken, with one student emphasising, "we fought through blood, sweat, and tears." Round Three against Highvale proved to be a fiercely competitive fight, with both the girls and boys narrowly clinching victories and losses in closely contested games. Ultimately, both Vermont teams secured a commendable third place. A special mention goes to Girls' Team Captain Amy Robinson, who delivered a great performance, winning all her singles matches. Josh Chia and Mr. Message also deserve noteworthy acknowledgment for their invaluable support and assistance throughout the day. The day was not just about victories but also about exceptional sportsmanship, exemplifying the spirit of Vermont!
