YEAR 5

FROM THE CLASSROOM
In our Reading lessons, we have now completed our class novel, Once by Morris Gleitzman. Students were deeply engaged throughout the study of the text and explored the novel’s themes, characters, and important messages. To conclude our unit, students wrote an overall summary of the novel and completed a book review, reflecting on their understanding of the story and their personal responses to the text.
In Writing, students have finished innovating on our model text, Adam Goodes, and are now working on an independent recount. They are incorporating the tools we have been learning, including asides and reported quotes, to add detail, voice, and interest to their writing.
In Mathematics, students have been learning about different transformations of shapes, including reflection, rotation and translation. They have participated in hands-on learning experiences using blocks and other manipulatives to explore how shapes can be moved and changed.
In Inquiry, students are continuing their media project, researching a notable Australian of their choice. They are exploring a variety of creative ways to present their learning, with some students choosing to conduct interviews and others creating digital trading cards. It has been wonderful to see students showcasing their knowledge through engaging and innovative formats.
Quotes
“Writing has been so much fun, I was able to write a recount based on myself!”
- Ansh 5A
“I have loved learning about 3D shapes and the different categories”
- Angel 5A
“I’m going to draw an Eiffel tower as my mascot for France!”

Finally, students have been highly engaged and excited about the upcoming World Cup. To extend this interest, they participated in a creative “Design Your Own Mascot” activity, where they planned and designed their own unique characters to represent the tournament. Students explored ideas such as personality, appearance and symbolism, and used their creativity to bring their mascots to life.
