Junior School News

As we approach the end of another busy and exciting term, it's the perfect opportunity to reflect on all that we have achieved together. From pizza making adventures to visits from firefighters, there has certainly never been a dull moment in our classrooms!

The confidence, independence and resilience shown by every student, especially our Prep students, has been wonderful to witness and is something truly worth celebrating. It has been such a privilege to watch them grow, flourish and develop into the unique, capable and thoughtful young people they are becoming.

We are incredibly proud of everything our students have accomplished this term and are so grateful for the support of our wonderful families along the way. We can't wait to see what exciting adventures, learning opportunities and special memories next term will bring!

Prep

In MSL, our Prep students have been learning about Magic 'e' when an 'e' is added to the end of a word, it often makes the vowel say its name, turning words like cap into cape, pin into pine, and mad into made. We have also been working hard on paired reading fluency within our literacy block.

Just look at how proud they are. 🌟

In Maths, the Prep students have been learning to represent numbers to 10 on a number track. They have been reviewing numeral recognition from 0–10 and revisiting the purpose of a number line. They have been busy practising placing numbers in the correct order and identifying missing numbers on a number track. Helping to strengthen their understanding of number sequence and build confidence with early number concepts.

Year One

The spotlight was shining on two of our very own Year One stars this weekend! Well done ladies we heard you represented our school so beautifully.

In MSL, the Year One students have been learning about Sail Away, where the digraphs ai and ay make the long /ā/ sound in words. They have been identifying whether ai is used in the middle of a base word, such as rain, train and paint, or whether ay is used at the end of a base word, such as play, day and tray.

In Writing, the Year One students have been busy learning how to identify sentence fragments and work out which important parts are missing. They are developing their understanding of complete sentences by recognising that every sentence needs to express a complete idea which must include a who/what (a noun and a what doing). If one of these components are missing from a sentence it becomes a fragment. Students have been practising identifying missing nouns and verbs and adding them to fragments to create complete, meaningful sentences. This work is helping to strengthen their writing skills and deepen their understanding of sentence structure.

In Maths, the Year One students are learning to identify and match two digit numbers represented in different ways. They have been exploring numbers using numerals, number words, ten frames, MAB blocks, pictures and collections of objects. By comparing and matching these different representations, students are developing a stronger understanding of place value and recognising that two-digit numbers are made up of tens and ones.

Year Two

We warmly welcome Mrs O’Brien back from her wonderful trip to Ireland. We hope you had a magnificent time creating special memories with your family.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Miss Dixon, who cared for 2O while Mrs O’Brien was away. I often heard giggles and laughter coming from their classroom and even caught Miss Dixon going the extra mile to help students understand new vocabulary by acting out the meaning of the word engaged. Thank you, Miss Dixon, for your enthusiasm, care, and dedication to the students.

In MSL students have been learning about the when we hear the long /ū/ sound in a word, we can use ue in the middle of a base word (such as blue and glue) or ew at the end of a base word (such as grewthrew, and flew) using the spelling hook A Few to the Rescue!

Delving into our novel study Walking in Gajhudu Country, students have been building upon their understanding of how to use commas in a list to make their writing clearer and more engaging. They have been learning to use fronted adverbial phrases, which are phrases placed at the beginning of a sentence to give extra detail about when, where, or how something is happening. As part of their learning, students have developed their knowledge of Kakadu, discovering fascinating facts such as more than 10,000 crocodiles living there and over 280 species of birds being found in the region. Students have loved learning about the Northern Territory and have thoroughly enjoyed exploring its unique landscapes, diverse wildlife, and rich cultural heritage.

In Mathematics, The Year Two students have been on a measure-ment mission, exploring and comparing the length of all sorts of objects! They have been measuring using informal units, estimating carefully, and then checking their thinking using metres for objects, heights, and distances. Along the way, they have been becoming length legends as they compare and order measurements with growing confidence and skill. To extend their learning, students are now challenged to choose the most appropriate unit of measurement when measuring lengths,  heights, and distances, thinking carefully about when to use informal units or standard units like centimetres or metres.

We have some enthusiastic mathematicians and artists across the junior school who have been going the extra mile by practising their skills at home. Students couldn't wait to share her hard work, confidently demonstrating how to subtract three digit numbers using regrouping. Their enthusiasm, initiative and eagerness to learn are truly wonderful, and we are so proud of the effort you all put into extending yourself beyond the classroom!

Feast of Sacred Heart ✝️

The children enjoyed a fun filled day celebrating the Feast of the Sacred Heart. They loved spending time with the Year 6 students and immersing themselves in a variety of engaging activities beyond their usual classroom learning. It was a beautiful opportunity to connect with peers, strengthen relationships and reflect on the importance of our school community.

A big shout out to the wonderful Miss Maloney for all her organisation and preparation behind the scenes. We appreciate you so much!
