Year 8 Textiles

At the end of a highly productive term, Year 8 Textiles students brought their classroom to life with an exciting Newspaper Fashion Challenge. Tasked with transforming ordinary newspaper into wearable designs, students embraced the opportunity with enthusiasm, creativity, and impressive technical skill.
Working collaboratively and independently, students experimented with a wide range of textile construction techniques. Plaiting, pleating, and carefully crafted rosettes featured prominently in their designs, alongside inventive approaches to structure and form. The results were nothing short of remarkable, with students producing an array of fashion items including vests, hats, handbags, and even spectacles... all made entirely from newspaper.
The highlight of the challenge was a lively parade, where students proudly showcased their creations to a neighbouring Year 8 Art class. The room buzzed with energy as each design was presented, celebrating both individuality and teamwork. The parade not only highlighted the students’ craftsmanship but also their confidence and willingness to take creative risks.
This joyful and dynamic project was a fitting conclusion to a successful term of making. It demonstrated the students’ growing understanding of textile techniques, as well as their ability to innovate and problem-solve using unconventional materials. The Newspaper Fashion Challenge was a clear reminder that creativity can transform even the simplest materials into something extraordinary.
